The good- narration. Nigel Peever immediately brings to mind the actor Vincent Price, in both tone and inflection. He reads with a kind of creepy joy that really couldn’t be matched by anyone else.

The bad- story selection. There are many stories here that would fit in the author’s other series better. Not here. Many stories have nothing to do with hauntings at all. They are all presented more like works of fiction, rather than the true tales that they purport to be.

The ugly- sound effects. The stories are “ enhanced” by music and sound effects that just completely detract from the performance.

Within this series, this one is soooo much better than the first couple. The jokes land well, and there is a lot more to the plot. Plus, you know, monsters. Whereas I think that some of the voices for the characters should have been different, it still comes over well. Dracula is still as evil as other incarnations, but surrounds himself with some stupid people. The rift between vampires and werewolves also comes across well here. Simon Carr hit the ball out of the park with this one. Once again, you should have some knowledge of previous books, as characters from them show up here, regardless of how hidden they try to be. Looking forward to the next.

This entry in the series is a little lackluster. Where the first book might have had a thin plot, this one is thinner. The book jumps around to different characters and situations so far, it's hard to keep up with. If you get distracted even for a second, you've lost the flow. The voices are awesome, this narrator does an excellent job here. Again, the series is building up towards a conclusion, so it is required reading in order to get to the end game. Just make sure to devote your entire attention to it, or face the consequences.

After listening to the whole thing,I gave the narrator an extra star. Once the ending was revealed, the style makes much more sense. Story wise, I wasn’t as impressed with this one as I am later entries in the series. This one is a real thin plot line, with a bunch of gags hung it. It’s still very entertaining, and if you intend to go through the whole series, you have to start here. Later books are more fleshed out, and they do refer back to this book. I do recommend the series, and look forward to how it comes to a head later on.

Who here has not read this title? Any mystery reader worth his salt has read at least a couple Christie novels, so this review will concentrate on the performance. For the most part, it’s good. The narrator has an excellent voice for Hastings. My problem is that he’s not good for the man himself, Hercule Poirot. He seems to feel that a faster pace is good enough to separate the rest of the characters from the detective. Poirot deserves more. More inflection, more feeling, more everything. It’s hard to pull off, so it’s understandable. Otherwise, it’s an excellent reading of an even more excellent mystery. Michael Paul seems to enjoy the story, so the few problems I had are able to be overlooked.

Not a bad book by any means. It’s your basic cowboy story, with the added aspects of a steampunk story. People have implants that aid in their vision and give them added strength. There’s also a bit of alternate history here. The narrator did a nice job reading this one. Although at times it sounded like he was actually reading, those were few and far between. The character voices were different enough that you can tell which character is speaking. The story is a typical western story. Revenge, gunfights, guys in black hats, that kind of thing. As I am not a big fan of westerns, ( I went in thinking it was an “Indiana Jones” type of thing) I was pleasantly surprised by the story.

A send up of a bunch of different movies, this Our Fathers is slightly worse off than its predecessor. It feels like it was written as a holiday special, rather than an entry of the book series. It’s not laugh out loud like the first, but the jokes still fly fairly often. Gone are most of the sound effects from the first book, and that fact kinda made me miss them. The narrator isn’t as good here, either. It’s still a decent job, just not as good. Not as much differentiating the characters, and Mr. Wan sounded completely off. It’s still a very funny book, and I’m very impressed with it. Just maybe don’t listen back to back.

Lit-RPG books have become repetitive. Gamer gets sucked into the game, and basically plays from the inside. What happens when it’s the Game Master that gets pulled in? That’s what Homebrew is about. The GM gets pulled into a world of his own creation, and is forced to play alongside his friends, who while not knowing who he is, are the embodiment of their characters. The humor hits dead on, with plenty of Easter eggs for tabletop gamers. The story contains several rpg tropes, and subverts them, all the while acknowledging them. It’s a very funny, and entertaining book. The narration is excellent. I have no problems there. The only problem I had, and it’s a small one, was with the main character and his character sheet. Every time he checks it, the entire thing is gone through. It gets repetitive very quickly. By the end, even the performer rushes through it. Still, it’s a small gripe about an otherwise excellent book. It does end on a cliffhanger, and I hope to get the next in the series very soon.

First off, this book is goofy. Straight up goofy. Then again, so was the movie. It’s supposed to be. The book veers away from the movie in spots, much to comedic effect. There are several spots where the audience is referred to as listeners directly, as well as directly addressing the reader. If you’ve seen the movie, you know what you’re in for. If you haven’t (why not?) it’s a direct satire of consumerism. And the military. And politics. Pretty much everything really, but not in the way “Scary Movie” was. This book makes fun of everything, without trying to shoehorn in every joke the authors could think of. It’s a tight, very effective satire that will leave you laughing. Might make you give up the tomato juice for a bit, but all in all a great book that’s well worth it.

This book is silly. Really silly. I think there are more jokes per minute in this book than in most Terry Pratchett books. I can’t really summarize it. There’s just no way to do it. Suffice it that there are two priests trying to save the world. Without going insane in the process. The jokes fly, the ending comes, and then there’s more. And more. Seriously I thought my download skipped, but it’s another joke. I will say the background gags were a bit distracting. I mean, someone doesn’t have to say “moo” every time you mention the feral cows.( “Moo!” ) Anyway, it’s a worthwhile story, and the narration is excellent. This was a free review copy, and this was an unbiased review. Just watch out for the badgers.
