Historia
A major North American hydroelectric dam is blown up and the largest off-shore oil field in this hemisphere is destroyed in a brutal, coordinated terrorist attack. But there was one factor that the terrorists didn't take into account when they struck the Capitana platform off the coast of Colombia—slaughtering much of the crew and blowing up the platform—and that was the Capitana crew chief Dewey Andreas. Dewey, former Army Ranger and Delta, survives the attack, rescuing as many of his men as possible. But the battle has just begun.

Really interesting premise. The patience of the extremist adversaries is really well portrayed. Very well done.

Historia
Colorado Congressman Evan Kendrick is trying to live out his term of office quietly—when a political mole reveals to the world Kendrick's deepest secret: that Kendrick was the anonymous man in Masqar, the man who courageously freed the hostage held in the American embassy by Arab terrorists; the unknown hero who performed an act of outrageous daring then silently disappeared. Historia
A literary icon sometimes seen as a bridge between the Beat Generation and the hippies, Ken Kesey scored an unexpected hit with his first novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. His successful follow-up, Sometimes a Great Notion, was also transformed into a major motion picture, directed by and starring Paul Newman. Here, Oregon’s Stamper family does what it can to survive a bitter strike dividing their tiny logging community. And as tensions rise, delicate family bonds begin to fray and unravel.

Where is it going? When will it end?
Revisado: 09-03-12
What did you like best about Sometimes a Great Notion? What did you like least?
I was attracted to this title by the name Ken Kesey, recalling his prior work, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. It proved to be a disappointment.
I found it very difficult to keep track of which character was narrating at any given time. The narrative went on and on and on. I was wishing for the end by the second of four parts. The ending itself was quite unsatisfying, definitely not worth the significant investment in time.

Was The Adjustment Bureau worth the listening time?
The listening time was the major disappointment with this book. There was very little listening for the money spent.

Historia
Beyond memoir, this guidebook offers practical advice on everything from "How to Be the Black Friend" to "How to Be the (Next) Black President" to "How to Celebrate Black History Month". This is a humorous, intelligent, and audacious guide that challenges and satirizes the so-called experts, purists, and racists who purport to speak for all Black people. With honest storytelling and biting wit, Baratunde plots a path not just to blackness, but one open to anyone interested in simply "how to be".

A fun lesson in how to get along
Revisado: 04-02-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. I, an aging white man, found it to be really funny yet full of serious and insightful information into interpersonal relations. It is a very positive and constructive guide to getting along with your fellow man.
The performance is outstanding. Only the author could have delivered it this well.
What other book might you compare How to Be Black to and why?
I've never read anything else like it (but I'd like to...).

A good dose of Penn
Revisado: 04-02-12
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I would suggest that he pick a subject and stick with it. The atheism arguments are interesting, as are many of the personal anecdotes, but they just seem to be thrown together and shaken up. It's clear he didn't have enough material for the book he started to write and fluffed it up with personal stories. Don't get me wrong. If you like Penn's humor this book will probably work for you.
Would you be willing to try another book from Penn Jillette? Why or why not?
Yes
Which character ??? as performed by Penn Jillette ??? was your favorite?
Penn Jillette
Do you think God, No! needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No

Deborah Harkness’s sparkling debut, A Discovery of Witches, has brought her into the spotlight and galvanized fans around the world. In this tale of passion and obsession, Diana Bishop, a young scholar and a descendant of witches, discovers a long-lost and enchanted alchemical manuscript, Ashmole 782, deep in Oxford's Bodleian Library. Its reappearance summons a fantastical underworld, which she navigates with her leading man, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont.

A Love Story With a Lame Ending
Revisado: 03-12-11
This starts out promisingly with a view of the world from a modern day witch. There are glimpses of creatures (vampires, witches, and demons) living openly among humans, and interesting tidbits about magic and the varying characteristics of the creatures. The story line which is started is effectively abandoned in favor of a syrupy romance between a witch and a vampire. It is as if the author realizes she can't paint the rest of the picture she started and tries to cover her tracks with dime's worth of romance. The closing leaves dozens of loose ends and is completely unsatisfying.
On the positive side, the book was expertly narrated, leaving me with the feeling that I was in the presence of the main character much of the time.
