I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out...and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late. But I reassure myself: The Winchesters don’t know who I really am. They don’t know what I’m capable of....

Not terrible but certainly not good
Revisado: 02-20-25
STORY: The plot was very similar to "The Last Mrs. Parrish". The dialogue was so repetitive and somewhat childish that I started to get bored and only stuck it out to see how it ends.
NARRATION: I don't blame the narrator for the terrible accents; sometimes they get hired to do a narration job before they know what accents are needed.
OVERALL: Like others have said it's not worth the hype. No idea why people love it so much.

Having been approached by men falsely proclaiming their affection for her, she embraces the opportunity to set the terms of her marriage openly and honestly. After meeting Mr. Darcy and his sister, Elizabeth is determined to give them the home and care they deserve. Plot had potential..
Revisado: 01-31-23
STORY: The plot was interesting, different from the usual JA variations. It certainly had potential but the characters inner dialogue become long winded and repetitive. The story also had the same things happening over and over again with the same reactions. The story took a long time to move along or maybe it was Darcy's character that took a long time to learn the lesson? It's a very angsty story and that mixed with the repetitiveness was too much for me. I kept thinking "how much abuse can Elizabeth take?" Darcy's character is quite different from the original story. I finished the listening only to get to the HEA. Overall, not my cup of tea. If you like angsty, lengthy stories, this one is for you.
PERFORMANCE: I think Alexandra Lee Smith did an pretty good job with the narration. Voices for the main characters were easy to recognize but scenes with a lot of minor character were harder to distinguish. Reading pace was too slow for me. This was my first time listening to her narration but I had to speed it up to 1.20x to get it to sound right to me.

A wonderful epic story!
Revisado: 10-29-21
Loved this audiobook! It was beautifully written, the characters were well developed. As I listened there were many times I thought that this could easily be made into British TV show become the next big hit. This is so good it's now in my top 3 P&P variation books!
The Story: the chapters are a mix of past and present stories following the life of George Darcy (past) and his son Fitzwilliam Darcy (present) and everyone around them. What's great is that you get many points of view and are not limited to the main characters. It will make you feel all kinds of emotions as good stories tend to do and leaves you content.
The narration: Elizabeth Grace did an excellent job with the voices. Each one was distinct and the male voices are great! Absolutely loved that she adds a little dramatization to the narration! For example: If someone is laughing you hear it in the character's voice. Her voice is soothing and narration style immerses you in the story.
This one is definitely worth the credit! This is my first Elizabeth Adams book but I'll certainly be looking into her other titles, hoping to find another gem.

Historia
After thinking long and hard, I have come to the conclusion that - although it may not be the kind of love my sister and I once had in mind - marrying Mr Darcy would be marrying for a love of the deepest kind. Recovering from their parents' deaths, Elizabeth and Jane Bennet have held their family together, leaning on the support of their uncle, Edward Gardiner, to help them survive. Thus, when Mr. Gardiner is threatened with scandal and ruin, Elizabeth vows to help him.

Narration needs to be re-recorded!
Revisado: 10-15-21
I'm only an hour in and I'm leaving a review (which I never do) because the narration is driving me crazy. I'm liking the story so far but the narrator sounds like she was just chased by zombies and stopped to tell me this story. The deep breaths in between sentences is so loud it pulls you out of the story. I'm genuinely sorry that it bothers me this much. She rushes through the dialogue and then takes a slow deep breath. The result is that almost every character sounds like they are doing their "breathy sexy voice" and are exhausted at the same time. There is also some odd static noise at one point.
I'm taking a break and seriously considering returning this audiobook. Narration can make or break an audiobook and this one needs to be redone in my opinion.

Elizabeth Bennet anticipated nothing more than a pleasant day among friends and relations when the pleasure trip to the ruins of Bodden Chapel commenced. But what began as mere diversion turns frightening when the walls of the ancient church tumble down around them, endangering lives, demolishing pride and propriety, and bringing a hero into focus.

Enjoyable, but...
Revisado: 08-17-21
This book was good for what it was. The plot was very simple, the banter (when there was some) was fun, there was a twist to the paring which was unique. I think what annoyed me about the it is that the entire book was from Elizabeth's POV. It got tiring after a while. Especially when her thought process and her character deviates from the usually level-headed and smart character that we are (or at least I am) used to in these Pride and Prejudice variations.
Also, I usually love Stevie Zimmerman's narrations but this one grated in my ears a bit. The quality didn't seem as good, maybe it's just me or maybe it because this is the first time Zimmerman narrated for this author?
All in all, enjoyable but not Mackrory's best and trust me she has some excellent books on Audible. I've listened to quite a few of them. My favorite is "Haunting Mr. Darcy". If you're going to spend a credit I'd recommend listening to HMD first before this.

Narrator got better after the first one but with all the names in it, it was hard to follow. The end was a but underwhelming. I think the first was better in terms of plot.

Good story, narration could have been better.
Revisado: 05-25-21
As many reviews mentioned before: The story took some time to get into, lots of background building but about 1/3 of the way through, just when I thought about giving up, it got interesting. I think the narration was more to blame for my lack of interest. I guess I've been so spoiled by such fantastic narration nowadays that it's hard to go back. The character voices were not distinct enough to differentiate. I had to pay close attention to the names mentioned to know who was talking. Also, the "inner thoughts voice" was just a harsh whisper. I know it's a hard voice to do but when it's done well it's pure listening magic (A/N: Mary Jane Wells is master at it, check her out if you can!) Over all it was ok. Will I listen to it again?... probably not. w
Would I recommend it?..hmm the storyline was interesting, heroine was level-headed and kinda cool, there was some great history tidbits thrown in, so if you don't mind some average narration..yes, I'd totally recommend it.

Narration is fantastic, story is...
Revisado: 02-20-21
The narration is amazing, I don't expect anything less from Mary Jane Wells, she's simply a joy to listen too. (Although, her voice for Mr. Winterborne was a bit confusing, sounded Indian at times, maybe it was just me. )
The story line was... interesting. My problem with it: I dislike when the main female character is super stubborn and the male character bends over backwards to make her happy. Despite all her naivete, Kathleen is remarkably resistant to hearing people out. She wants respect but doesn't show respect to anyone else. She refuse to listen to Devon (honestly their chemistry was lacking, don't know why they like each other), she refuses to listen to Helen, her maid, the housekeeper, the butler, the horse guy...she thinks she know what's best for everyone even when they try to tell her different. I'm not saying Devon is a great (far from it) but at least he has growth/character development by the end of it.
In summary: this was not Lisa Kleypas's best book, her main characters where outshine by the side characters. I'm actually looking forward to those side character storyline.

Historia
Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy has a secret. The letter he presented to Miss Elizabeth Bennet after his ghastly proposal is not the only epistle he has written her. In this tale of longing, misadventure, and love, Jane Austen’s dearly loved Pride and Prejudice, is readapted as our hero has learned a powerful way of coping with his attraction to Miss Bennet. He writes her letters. The misguided suitor has declared himself, and Elizabeth Bennet has refused him, most painfully.

Excellent P&P variation
Revisado: 08-28-20
Another wonderful variation from Mackrory. This was well written and delightful. It had a good balance of angst and humor. A couple of twists and a HEA. What more could you want. Smith does a great job of narrating. Although Elizabeth's voice took a little getting used to, it wasn't long before I forgot who's reading it and simply enjoyed the story.
