Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Historia
Working at the local processing plant, Marcos is in the business of slaughtering humans - though no one calls them that anymore. His wife has left him, his father is sinking into dementia, and Marcos tries not to think too hard about how he makes a living. After all, it happened so quickly. First, it was reported that an infectious virus has made all animal meat poisonous to humans. Then governments initiated the "Transition". Now, eating human meat - "special meat" - is legal. Marcos tries to stick to numbers, consignments, processing.

Worth the hype
Revisado: 01-11-24
I held off on reading this for a while- thinking I'd be disappointed by the high expectations I had for it. Nope. It was every bit as disturbing and well done as I wanted it to be. Obviously, the subject matter is not for everyone but you know what you're getting into before you start... The imagery is intense. It's interesting to witness how different characters grapple with "how things are" while wrestling with the humanity (or lackthereof) of the situation.

As Titus investigates the shootings, he unearths terrible crimes.

After suffering through all of the the overly hyped-up BookTok suggestions, I was pleased to finally find a book that lived up to its reviews. The characters and story were well developed and held my interest until the very end. Looking forward to his other works

Historia
From New York Times best-selling author Stephen Graham Jones comes a novel that is equal parts psychological horror and cutting social commentary on identity politics and the American-Indian experience. Fans of Jordan Peele and Tommy Orange will love this story as it follows the lives of four American-Indian men and their families, all haunted by a disturbing, deadly event that took place in their youth. Years later, they find themselves tracked by an entity bent on revenge, totally helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a vengeful way.

Disorganized and Strange

The perspective switches abruptly and without reason. The story has potential but gets derailed often with unrelated tangents that don't enrich the plot. Also- WHY so much basketball?

Juvenile and Absurd
Revisado: 06-27-23
The main character is ridiculous. Nobody can be that stupid.
"Ohhh I would never do that obviously illogical thing." DOES IT EVERY TIME.
Her (horrible) intuition is almost laughable and is the main catalyst for every implausible yet predictable turn in this book. It seems like this was written by a middle schooler for a middle schooler. And the narrator...Oh my, did anyone listen to this before it was released? SOO many mispronounced words and a bizarre/intermittent midwestern accent. Don't waste a credit.

A young hospital security guard with a disturbingly unique taste in women. A maternity doctor with a horrifically unusual appetite. When the two of them meet, they embark on a journey of self-discovery while shattering societal norms and engaging in destructively aberrant behavior. Heartbreaking yet inspiring
Revisado: 01-27-22
My heart ached deeply for Sanford. I wish I could have reached into the story and rescue him from the horrors of his captivity. Both the depravity and the resilience of the human spirit are exemplified in this book. The narrator did an excellent job of switching between the meekness of Sanford and the maniacal Uncle Stuart. Despite being painful to listen to, I would definitely recommend.

This audiobook takes you on a shocking and disturbing path through the tales of evil and the role that women played during Hitler's reign. The history of the female Nazi is bizarre and unusual. As you discover the evil that prevailed, you may even be surprised to find yourself more empathetic toward the dark history of the Nazi culture.

Devoid of substance
Revisado: 01-27-22
It's as if the author read a synopsis of a different Irma Grese book and then expanded it into a 13 chapters. Of course, Grese was evil, vile, cruel, depraved, sadistic etc. but the entirety of this book is simply repeating those buzz words for 3 long hours. The narrator's bizarre and somewhat slurred delivery did not do any favors to improve the experience.
