This audio book kept me company through many hours of driving, and I felt a great deal of empathy towards this young man who was sharing his journey of trauma and healing. I think you have to be on a similar journey to appreciate this book. It is not a great work of literature (it doesn't claim to be), and there are parts where both the writing and the reading are a little repetitive and banal. But there are also some sparks of loveliness, and on the whole, I found it both engaging and moving. The symptom-bearers and truth-tellers in dysfunctional families live isolated lives as they struggle to break free and still stay enmeshed. My own experience has been that you have to be willing to lose everything if you really want to find yourself, and I don't think this young man is ready to do that yet. Everyone has their own timeline for healing, and I wish him well.

I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook from start to finish. (Disclaimer: I am a fan of Mae Martin's comedic style.) It is authentic and genuinely funny, yet at the same time it is trauma-informed. She's reached a stage where she is not throwing raw trauma narratives out. She's processed it and you can feel the care for an audience that is largely young people growing up in toxically heteronormative societies. If something like this had been around when I was younger, I might not have had to wait till my 40s to come out.

I'm going through a very tough period in my life and Brené Brown's "The Power of Vulnerability" has given me much to think about as I analyze how I got to this point, what I can do to get through it, and how I want to move forward as I heal and grow. Under the heading of vulnerability, the author packs a whole lot of very powerful concepts which she illustrates with beautifully recounted narratives from her own life. I'm all the way over here in Singapore and very far from her cultural context of Texas. But there's a universality to her material, at least in the way she has chosen to convey it, which resonates with me. Her voice reaches out to you with warmth and vibrates with love and understanding. I might not agree with all her definitions but within the parameters that she has set, I think she's done a great job of repackaging her academic research for a general public that is seeking answers to painful questions.
