Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet.

Revisado: 01-05-22
I owned the RC Bray version since 2015. Then I was suddenly no longer able to download the RC Bray version saying I did not own it. called audible technical support and they replaced it in my library with this new version. This not the recording I purchased and don’t like the way audible is messing with my library

Classical SciFi in Tradition of Hainish Cycle
Revisado: 10-21-18
Hollow World is telling a modern story about masculinity, contemporary culture, and identity in the tradition of the Ambiguous Utopian visions of Left Hand of Darkness or The Dispossessed. It has a feeling of Ursula K LeGuin and H.G. Wells, while at the same time being a more modern reimagination of the premise of coming to terms with "utopia." I read this book for the first time a couple of years ago, and relistening to it, following recent political events within the United States makes me think about the exciting way our lives are continually reflected back at us when we look into the future and see our hopes and fears blend into one.

Jump Into Elan In a Whole New Way
Revisado: 10-21-18
Death of Dulgath is like reading a fantastical/mythological version of Agatha Christi or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. We have always known that Royce is a thief, and Hadrian is a warrior, but Death of Dulgath and the subsequent book Disappearance of winters daughter are novels that feel like a who done it a mystery. The villain may be right out in the open but is fascinating to see the characters move through the realities and explore the crime in a small village, full of mystical powers, on the edge of the sea. This book is an excellent addition to the Riyria series. I would encourage people to read Revelations first because some small things in it could be spoilers for both Revelations and possibly the Legends of the First Empire Series.

The Crown Tower is the impregnable remains of the grandest fortress ever built and home to the realm’s most prized possessions. But it isn’t gold or jewels that the wizard is after, and if he can just keep them from killing each other, they just might succeed.

Before a great partnership there is something else
Revisado: 10-21-18
I have re-read most Riyria books excess of five times. The crown tower I read once and revisited one more time, and that is it for me for now. It is a well written, a fantastic story, has interesting characters, a great female protagonist, and explore the backstory of Gwen DeLancy that rounds her out as a character more than we ever got in the Riyria Revelations. That being said, its just painful if you love Hadrian and Royce to see them before they are Riyria. I think every fan of the Riyria Revelations needs to read this story, as a valuable addition to the series that lets you see things in the revelations in a whole new light on a re-read. That being said, I am not sure when I will reread The Crown Tower, because it can be a bit of a painful read if you are already emotionally invested in these characters.

A Dark Entry to the Chronicles with great story
Revisado: 10-21-18
When I started reading the Riyria Chronicles, I was expecting to get more adventures with Hadrian and Royce and see them develop their relationships with their allies. I was not expecting an excellent backstory for Rueben Hilfred, the Pickerings, and many of the other characters you grow to love in the Riyria Revelations. Please read the Revelations first, before you read this book, as I feel that this story contains major spoilers for Theft of Swords, that I would instead get in Theft of Swords for the first time.
This book is darker and in some ways more disturbing than the other entries in the Riyria Revelations. I value this entry and gain a new appreciation for many characters having read it. That being said, having re-read most of the books in the series more than 5 times, I read The Rose and Thorn twice, and I am not sure when I will revisit it.

Read this book for Evelyn Hemsworth!
Revisado: 10-21-18
Evelyn Hemsworth is by far one of the greatest - one-off - characters in any fantasy series I have ever read. Imagine if you were to put Emily Post into a fantasy world and you would get Evelyn Hemsworth. This entry is my favorite of the Riyria Chronicles. Along with Death of Dulgath, Disappearance of Winters Daughter would be a fun entrance point into the lives of Hadrian and Royce if you do not start with the Riyria Revelations. I would encourage you to read Revelations first because although you probably don't need the exposition from those novels, I appreciate this novel more having met many of its characters in the future in Wintertide and other novels. It is both an enjoyable crime novel, a monster/horror book, and a high fantasy story rolled into one entertaining read.
Come for the thief, the warrior, and everything you love about Michael J Sullivan, stay for Evelyn Hemsworth and conversations about Unicorns!!!

The Perfect Conclusion to A Series
Revisado: 10-20-18
Wintertide and Percepliquis in this compendium are a fantastic two-part conclusion to one of the best fantasy series I have ever read. Often reading fantasy (which I do a lot) the last book in the series does not live up to the expectations of the first. Ursula K. LeGuin's Wizard of Earthsea, the Wheel of Time Series, and many others set up so much, but end up not delivering in the last book, or do not know how to wrap it up. These two books are both self-contained adventures with fantastic beginnings, middles, and ends, but they also satisfyingly wrap up the story of many people in the series whether its the main protagonists we met in Theft of Swords, or minor side characters including one of my favorite Monsignor Merton who had one scene in a prior book. You will not be disappointed how this series ends, it's worth listening all the way straight through to get there!

Best-selling author Michael J. Sullivan’s mesmerizing Riyria Revelations series has found a welcome home with fans of magic, clashing swords, and daring heroes. This second volume finds Royce and Hadrian on a quest to enlist the southern Nationalists to aid the ever-weakening kingdom of Melengar. The Emerald Storm is the best Riyria Book
Revisado: 10-20-18
Michael J Sullivan's publishers released two books together as one in this compendium Rise of Empire. Although I enjoy Nyphron rising, there are some elements of the miss treatment of Thrace and Arista that are challenging to listen too, although I realize that sadly things like that do happen both in fantasy, but in the real world.
The Emerald Storm is my favorite of all the books in the Riyria series. Imagine if in one book you were reading elements of the movies: Gladiator, Indiana Jones, Master & Commander, and The Italian Job. It seems like a weird mash-up that should never work, but instead, it works perfectly and creates a vivid world that is exciting to listen to again and again. If it didn't contain many spoilers for prior books in the series, and the Warrick plotline, I think it would be a fantastic and enjoyable stand-alone read. It is worth reading Theft Of Swords and the First Half of Rise of Empire to be able to enjoy your time aboard the Emerald Storm.

Historia
In Age of Myth, fantasy master Michael J. Sullivan launched audiences on an epic journey of magic and adventure, heroism and betrayal, love and loss. Now the thrilling saga continues as the human uprising is threatened by powerful enemies from without—and bitter rivalries from within. Raithe, the God Killer, may have started the rebellion by killing a Fhrey, but long-standing enmities dividing the Rhunes make it all but impossible to unite against the common foe. And even if the clans can join forces, how will they defeat an enemy whose magical prowess renders them indistinguishable from gods?

Tim Gerald Reynolds brings Neath to life
Revisado: 10-20-18
As a fan of the Riyria Revelations, Age of Swords illustrates the through lines throughout the world of Elan. In the Revelations, we got to meet a Belgriclungreian / Dherg / Drawf in the Revelations, and a few more in the Chronicles, Age of Swords allows us to dive into both better understanding our own humanity through comparing the lives of humans to the culture of the Belgriclungreians and Fhrey. Listening to Age of Swords, it has been exciting to see the seeds of how the story of one individual can turn into a history, a history shaped by the victors, history turning into myth, and the stories we hear in Elan in the Riyria Chronicles, come to life in the personal lives of the characters. I can not recommend Michael J Sullivan, and all the books set in Elan more. I would rank it 6-stars if I could.
