Historia
On February 1, 1910, the vivacious, diamond-adorned music hall performer Belle Elmore suddenly vanished from her home, causing alarm among her friends, the entertainers of the Music Hall Ladies’ Guild. Great but none of the heart of The Five. It was also longer than it needed to be. I wanted to love it as much as The Five but just didn’t.

Historia
A powerful work of reportage and American history that braids the story of the forced removal of Native Americans onto treaty lands in the nation’s earliest days, and a small-town murder in the 1990s that led to a Supreme Court ruling reaffirming Native rights to that land more than a century later.

I’ve been following this story since first listening to the This Land podcast. This book expands the story greatly, obviously. It is fascinating. The author does a wonderful job with the narration.

Historia
As an immigrant who came to the West, El Akkad believed that it promised freedom. A place of justice for all. But in the past twenty years, reporting on the War on Terror, Ferguson, climate change, Black Lives Matter protests, and more, and watching the unmitigated slaughter in Gaza, El Akkad has come to the conclusion that much of what the West promises is a lie. That there will always be entire groups of human beings it has never intended to treat as fully human—not just Arabs or Muslims or immigrants, but whoever falls outside the boundaries of privilege.

This is a document of this time in history that needs to be read far and wide. Well done, Omar El Akkad.

Historia
A Very Private School offers a clear-eyed, first-hand account of a culture of cruelty at the school Charles Spencer attended in his youth and provides important insights into an antiquated boarding system. Drawing on the memories of many of his schoolboy contemporaries, as well as his own letters and diaries from the time, he reflects on the hopelessness and abandonment he felt at aged eight, viscerally describing the intense pain of homesickness and the appalling inescapability of it all.

Historia
Always on the periphery, looking on, young Frankie Howe was never quite sure enough of herself to take center stage—after all, life had already judged her harshly. Now old, Frankie finds it easier to forget the life that came before. Then Damian, a young Irish caretaker, arrives at her London flat, there to keep an eye on her as she recovers from a fall. A memory is sparked, and the past crackles into life as Damian listens to the story Frankie has kept stored away all these years.

The best Graham Norton book yet
Revisado: 01-16-25
What a beautiful surprise this book was. So different from Graham Norton’s other books and I have loved every one. Frankie was blessed with such rich characters and such a breadth of story, well, it was indeed a lifetime. I cried at several spots, the AIDS storyline in Frankie’s NYC life, and her ultimate fate and resurgence. Such a beautifully written book. And you must, must listen to Graham Norton read his own words. I don’t know if anyone else could do them justice. I won’t forget Frankie anytime soon.

Historia
On July 22, 2011, Anders Behring Breivik detonated a bomb outside government buildings in central Oslo, killing eight people. He then proceeded to a youth camp on the island of Utøya, where he killed 69 more, most of them teenage members of Norway's governing Labour Party. In One of Us, the journalist Åsne Seierstad tells the story of this terrible day and what led up to it. What made Breivik, a gifted child from an affluent neighborhood in Oslo, become a terrorist?

Revisado: 01-06-25
Truly fantastic true crime novel about an event that fascinated me and horrified me for years. I still have vivid memories of following the news accounts of the massacre. The book answered so many questions for me. An excellent piece of journalism that does not glorify the terrorist.

So this really does end in the middle of a word
Revisado: 09-12-24
I, of course, thought there was a problem with the audiobook, but I think I’ve confirmed through other reviews that there is a very abrupt ending to the book. It’s not a spoiler, per se, as it has nothing to do with the case at the heart of the book. But I would say it is safe to say this is the first book of the series. I very much enjoyed the narrator. He did a great job. The story itself is less “cozy crime” (which I had anticipated) and very much Christie. Very slow pace. And I mean very slow. But I thought it came together very well and was a very loving homage to Christie. And you can’t go wrong with Iceland. I would recommend this book. Just be aware of what you are getting. I’ll be curious to listen to the next book.

Revisado: 02-18-24
Read with great charm, wit, and empathy throughout for all the characters by Simon Vance. Written so beautifully by Matt Cain. The kind of world we should all want to inhabit. I loved it. Definitely, definitely stay on after the book ends to listen to the interviews between the author and gay men of Albert’s age!

Superb narration, but you knew that
Revisado: 01-28-24
Probably the best narrating of one of his books that Graham Norton has done. They are all brilliant, of course, but this book had so many quiet little snarky asides and you can just picture Graham’s face reading them. Fabulous characters, a story that will touch most people given the main topics. I was thinking all along it would be a 4 star book, but nope, it’s 5 stars. I loved it.
