Historia
Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment is universally regarded as one of literature's finest achievements, as the great Russian novelist explores the inner workings of a troubled intellectual. Raskolnikov, a nihilistic young man in the midst of a spiritual crisis, makes the fateful decision to murder a cruel pawnbroker, justifying his actions by relying on science and reason, and creating his own morality system. Dehumanized yet sympathetic, exhausted yet hopeful, Raskolnikov represents the best and worst elements of modern intellectualism. The aftermath of his crime and Petrovich's murder investigation result in an utterly compelling, truly unforgettable cat-and-mouse game. This stunning dramatization of Dostoevsky's magnum opus brings the slums of St. Petersburg and the demons of Raskolnikov's tortured mind vividly to life.

This audible book is out of order!
Revisado: 12-28-18
The audio book starts in the middle of the story and then part way through, the beginning of the book can be found.
Very irritating!

Finally! Female protagonists who don’t need rescuing!
Revisado: 08-12-18
Subject says it all. I am happy to read a humorous mystery which put out the clues for me to follow. But most of all, I’m happy that the heroine is skilled and can rescue herself (with some help at times from her old lady friends)

Historia
Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first Lo's stay is nothing but pleasant: The cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, and gray skies fall.

Surprisingly good
Revisado: 12-04-16
After having read several similar books where the female protagonist is weak and never redeems herself (Ie: Girl on the Train) this was a quite satisfying read.
The reader was very good too.

Historia
In rural, impoverished Burgoyne County, New York, a pattern of strange deaths begins to emerge: Adolescent boys and girls are found murdered, their corpses left hanging in gruesome, ritualistic fashion. Senior law enforcement officials are quick to blame a serial killer, but their efforts to apprehend this criminal are peculiarly ineffective.

Disappointing protagonist
Revisado: 11-05-16
There were parts of this story that I enjoyed but the things I did not enjoy kept getting in the way.
These include too much, needless profanity and a main character who gets into an icky romantic entanglement very deep and very fast. Maybe this is Caleb Carr's fantasy but it's hard to understand how everyone in his life was so supportive of a 40 year old doctor with two PhDs falling "in love" with an uneducated 20 year old blind girl.

Why not write women smarter?
Revisado: 06-12-16
My title says it all. This is not only about this book. I'm just getting tired of book heroines constantly making dumb, choices. It all works out in the end but it gets old.

It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco, the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. All because some twenty years earlier the United States lost a war - and is now occupied by Nazi Germany and Japan.

I am not a shallow person, but I have to admit that this book was beyond me. I'm at a loss to explain what is was about or what I was supposed to take away from reading it.
