Mr. Patterson, please stop trying to write romance
Revisado: 05-16-16
I love the main character and fill compelled to endure the fluff that is interjected in these books to follow the series. One romance scene was so poorly written, I laughed out loud. And the scenes where the grown women sit around on a bed eating ice cream from a container is likely some teenaged fantasy run amuck.
The two main story lines have some serious coincidences that are designed to throw you off the trail...it would be better if they stuck to one well planned mystery instead, but I appreciate they were trying a new formula.
Overall, not terrible. I listen during my commute so it's light enough to keep me occupied without distracting.

More trial drama than crime drama
Revisado: 12-06-15
I'm luke warm on this series, but I want to like it... I like the main character, but sometimes I wonder if Mr. Patterson has ever met a group of professional women. One scene in this book, they're described as squealing and jumping around because they hadn't seen each other in like a week....10 years of not seeing my best friend, there would be no squealing or jumping. Several little scenes like that throughout the series make me question what he was thinking, and makes the women look silly, unprofessional, emotional and/or immature.
There's a lot of trial drama in this one with bookends for the crime story. I'm not really in to court drama, but if you are, it's a nice twist to the series I guess. I found it unnecessary, and really more uncomfortable than intriguing.
The random background music in the recording is SUPER distracting. Especially during the romantic scenes...makes me feel like I'm listening to a terrible b-movie, or worse, 80s porn.
The narrator is definitely better than the female narrator for books one and two.

Historia
An extraordinarily beautiful Amish woman, a dangerous femme fatale, is the central figure in Linda Castillo's Her Last Breath, a story that reveals a dark side of Painter's Mill and its seemingly perfect Amish world. A rainy night, an Amish father returning home with his three children, a speeding car hurtling toward them out of nowhere. What at first seems like a tragic, but routine car accident suddenly takes on a more sinister cast as evidence emerges that nothing about the crash is accidental.

Great story, convoluted ending
Revisado: 08-13-15
I'll start by saying I really love this series. Kate is one of my favorite characters I've read in a long time. I didn't think I'd get used to the first person narrative, but it works and I've grown to really like it.
There's a slightly over used plot device in this series: Kate, an intelligent, trained law enforcement professional has a habit of going into potential crime scenes without back up or communication. I can usually forgive the author because Kate usually gets herself out if the situation without the constant need of a man rushing in to save the day. This book though, without spoiling, has the most silly, convoluted run in with the "bad guy" I think I've ever read.
Overall though, great story, competently written, great performance. Highly recommend this series.

I wanted to like this.
Revisado: 08-12-15
I tried to like this story. I need a new series and stumble on this. The main character is really hard to relate to because the author has made her to be everything rolled up into one person: victim, Olympic athlete, computer genius, criminal profiler, psychologist, marksmen...the list goes on and on and on. The rest of the story wasn't any less cliche.
The internal character monologues are all way too long and over explain every plot point. Each monologue started to feel like teenage angst, but maybe that's the author's target audience?
I ended up skipping several chapters and didn't get lost. So a chapter turner, not so much a page turner.
If you want a good crime novel, this isn't it. But if you want lots and lots and lots of character development and internal turmoil, you'll like it.
The narrator did a good job. I can't fault her for the slow moving story.
