Historia
Distilled over many years from Henry Louis Gates, Jr.’s, legendary Harvard introductory course in African American studies, The Black Box: Writing the Race, is the story of Black self-definition in America through the prism of the writers who have led the way. From Phillis Wheatley and Frederick Douglass, W. E. B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington, to Zora Neale Hurston and Richard Wright, James Baldwin and Toni Morrison—these writers used words to create a livable world, a home, for Black people destined to live out their lives in a bitterly racist society.

An excellent discussion of the roots of the Black American caste system. The text is a superb weaving of literature and orature from America's Black elite that exposes their fears and rejections of "the other side" of themselves and how the neuroses generated in slavery and captivity causes continued intraracial separation. I am on my second listening of the text and am glad I purchased the book for future reference. Bravo, Dr. Gates.

Historia
For more than a century, the city of Atlanta has been associated with Black achievement in education, business, politics, media, and music, earning it the nickname "the Black Mecca." Atlanta's long tradition of Black education dates back to Reconstruction, and produced an elite that flourished in spite of Jim Crow, rose to leadership during the civil rights movement, and then took power in the 1970s by building a coalition between White progressives, business interests, and Black Atlantans. But Atlanta's political leadership has consistently mishandled the Black poor.

Revisado: 06-04-24
I loved this book. I lived in ATL for 25 years during most of this historical rendition. While I knew most of this history, I still found precious bits that I didn’t know. I am about to listen to it again because it was that interesting. I especially loved the explanations of lyrics from the dungeon family. Well done!!

I loved this text. I am a huge fan of April Ryan, and watched her on many of the days and broadcasts she describes accurately in this book. I am so very proud and grateful for her strength and courage to ask the hard questions, regardless of the price she knows she is going to pay. Bravo, Ms. Ryan.

Historia
In White Fragility, Robin DiAngelo explained how racism is a system into which all White people are socialized and challenged the belief that racism is a simple matter of good people versus bad. DiAngelo also made a provocative claim: White progressives cause the most daily harm to people of color. In Nice Racism, her follow-up work, she explains how they do so. Drawing on her background as a sociologist and over 25 years working as an anti-racist educator, she picks up where White Fragility left off and moves the conversation forward.

A thoughtful, strongly argued presentation. Well researched and stimulating. I remember teaching parts of this argument, like Black people’s strongest root is in the south, back in the 1990s. Such value in these words. Bravo!!!!!

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Very stark, truthful and scholarly explanation of race relations in America, its origins and commonalities with other countries. Its arguments parallel nicely the arguments of Toni Morrison and Howard Zinn.

I love listening to Sanders commentary live, which is what made me listen to this book. I wanted to hear her voice for an extended period. I was not disappointed. The text was coherent, entertaining and easy to follow in listening format (I am a reader and didn't think I would enjoy an Audible book. This first experience was stellar. An awesome book for Millennials.
