Historia

I feel a little betrayed. Danziger Trilogy implice full accounts of the three early Grass novels. the main reason why I bought it was 'hundejahre '. however there are only exerts in the audio book. be aware when you buy. there should have been a hint about this fact!

Historia
The United States spends an excess $1.5 trillion annually on health care compared to other wealthy countries—yet the amount of time that Americans live in good health ranks a lowly 68th in the world. At the heart of the problem is Big Pharma, which funds most clinical trials and therefore controls the research agenda, withholds the real data from those trials as corporate secrets, and shapes most of the information relied upon by health care professionals.

sobering account of a greedy and cynical industry
Revisado: 05-21-24
in debth researched, I point of critique: the author speaks often of the 'manufacturers' of drugs when he means the license holder. manufacturing plays a minor role in the whole process (5-10% of the cost). it might be a solution for the whole problem to decouple the 'making and selling' of a drug from the research and development by requiring that independent companies perform these functions. in this setup more transparency would be accomplished.

Historia
The fighting that raged in the East during the First World War was every bit as fierce as that on the Western Front, but the titanic clashes between three towering empires - Russia, Austro-Hungary, and Germany - remains a comparatively unknown facet of the Great War. With the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the war in 2014, Collision of Empires is a timely expose of the bitter fighting on this forgotten front - a clash that would ultimately change the face of Europe forever.

Pharmaceutical breakthroughs such as antibiotics and vaccines rank among some of the greatest advancements in human history. Yet, exorbitant prices for life-saving drugs, safety recalls affecting tens of millions of Americans, and soaring rates of addiction and overdose on prescription opioids have caused many to lose faith in drug companies. Now, Americans are demanding a national reckoning with a monolithic industry.

what I missed was some (self) reflection what lead to Trump. why did he choose to occupy the GOP (and not the Dems)? I think she can contribute significantly to that discussion (maybe in a future volume)

Historia
In his best-selling autobiography, Albert Speer, Minister of Armaments and chief architect of Nazi Germany, repeatedly insisted he knew nothing of the genocidal crimes of Hitler's Third Reich. In this revealing new biography, author Martin Kitchen disputes Speer's lifelong assertions of ignorance and innocence, portraying a far darker figure who was deeply implicated in the appalling crimes committed by the regime he served so well. Kitchen reconstructs Speer's life with what we now know, including information from valuable new sources that have come to light only in recent years.

excellent insight into an evil soul
Revisado: 04-04-23
after listening to this book I am not ambiguos about Speer any longer. he was not the technical genius he liked to portray himself, but a (maybe genius) self-image creator and polisher. the production wonder he is still famous for in Germany was a fiction created by him. The ideological distance to the nazis he is still famous for was fiction. people like him were and are necessary to make the devil accepted by the masses.
