Warming: Spoilers Ahead!!
This is the first book I’ve read from Jess Lourey and dang she has me hooked!
I am a huge crime junkie and this book fully met my expectations on how a good crime story is told. I knew that this was a thriller, but I was not expecting all the turns! I found some of them predictable, but not in a bad way.
For example, I knew that Heather’s dad was going to fall into a bad light in some way. I figured that something had gone on with Maureen’s mom due to the story Heather told at the beginning of the book. I did fully think that the sheriff was keeping Beth, so that shocked me that she was being kept by Ed.
Overall, I loved this story and cannot wait to read another one of Lourey’s books!

Historia
Seventeen years ago, King Odysseus sailed to war with Troy, taking with him every man of fighting age from the island of Ithaca. None of them has returned, and the women of Ithaca have been left behind to run the kingdom. Penelope was barely into womanhood when she wed Odysseus. While he lived, her position was secure. But now, years on, speculation is mounting that her husband is dead, and suitors are beginning to knock at her door. No one man is strong enough to claim Odysseus' empty throne—not yet.

The Ending Made it Worth It!
Revisado: 06-19-23
I really struggled to get into this book initially. I didn’t quiet understand Hera’s perspective, so that threw me off. Towards the middle it started to get into a grove and I ended up enjoying it. I loved the parts with sarcastic humor - this book showed me a new side to Hera that is never told! She’s always villain, so it was a nice change of pace to see another side of her!

The Anti-Hero
Revisado: 06-11-23
This book blew me away! I decided to read this book after rewatching the entire hunger games series. I had been intrigued by Snow in the original book series, but there’s so little about him without relation to Katniss. This story gave the perfect amount of background about Snow and would absolutely be a successful “stand-alone” story had this have been by itself.
Lucy Gray and Sejanus are the hero’s in a villains story, which doesn’t do them justice but it shows Snow’s real self. At first, I sympathized with Snow, but by the end you can see the Snow we all already knew. Perfect transition from “privileged capital boy” to “ruthless leader” on Collins’ part.

Historia
Phaedra has been cast to the side all her life: daughter of an adulteress, sister of a monster, and now unwilling bride to the much-older, power-hungry Theseus. Young, naïve, and idealistic, she has accepted her lot in life, resigned to existing under the sinister weight of Theseus’s control and the constant watchful eye of her handsome stepson Hippolytus. When supposedly pious Hippolytus assaults her, Phaedra’s world is darkened in the face of untouchable, prideful power. In the face of injustice, Phaedra refuses to remain quiet any longer.

New Perspective
Revisado: 05-11-23
I really liked this story! Each time I listen to a new Greek fiction retelling, I have to remind myself that each author takes their own spin on the original story. Shepperson took a completely new approach to this story and I personally really liked it. Theseus is, of course, incredibly unlikable which follows other stories I’ve read. Hippolytus was told from a new perspective from what I’m used too. He is normally portrayed as a shy, zealous boy who actively avoids women, but this story calls bs on that idea and I really liked it. I wouldn’t recommend if you don’t want to hear a story from the perspective of female empowerment — but I found it to be a great read and very powerful! Kandake — just wow, not what I expected at all. Overall, great story if you’re willing to hear a new perspective!

Pleasantly surprised!
Revisado: 04-01-23
I bought this book because I loved the premise. I hadn’t read a book detailing Medusa’s side of the story and I was intrigued! I had previously read some of Haynes other works and this book tops all of her other stories (in my opinion). I find it very easy to follow along with and it sounds beautiful! I previously found it difficult to follow along with Haynes writing, but this one was the perfect level of poetic prose. Great story and wonderful narration! You can feel the emotion in her voice when she reads her characters. If you like Greek fiction, give this book a shot! You’ll be engaged and interested within the first few chapters!

Historia
When a banished witch falls in love with the legendary trickster Loki, she risks the wrath of the gods in this moving, subversive debut novel that reimagines Norse mythology. Angrboda’s story begins where most witches' tales end: with a burning. A punishment from Odin for refusing to provide him with knowledge of the future, the fire leaves Angrboda injured and powerless, and she flees into the farthest reaches of a remote forest. There she is found by a man who reveals himself to be Loki, and her initial distrust of him transforms into a deep and abiding love.

Beautifully Written!
Revisado: 02-20-23
The Witch’s Heart has a bit of everything. I loved the plot and I found the story to be well told. I don’t know anything about Norse mythology, but I am going to research more about it because of this book!
I am a huge Greek mythology retellings person, so I gave this a try and I’m happy I did. The beginning is a tad slow, but once it picks up the pace I found it hard to stop listening.

Clytemnestra rules Mycenae now, along with her new lover, Aegisthus, and together they plot the bloody murder of Agamemnon on the day of his return after nine years at war.

Orestes Carried
Revisado: 01-22-23
I got this book on a whim and initially I had a hard time getting into the story. I wasn’t a huge fan of Clytemnestra’s voice actor, so I found her parts grating.
However, Orestes’ storyline was great! His voice actor was clear and sounded great. I thought his POV was by far the most interesting and he was the most likable character. I haven’t heard a story told from his POV yet, so that was a cool switch that I wasn’t expecting. Good read! I don’t think this book compares to Madeline Miller’s works, but it’s similar in vain to Jennifer Saint’s or even Natalie Haynes.

Expect the Unexpected!
Revisado: 10-10-22
This story was so great! The twists and turns were decently unpredictable (even for a crime junkie). Even when you thought you solved the case, there was another door that opened.
I found the beginning a bit slow, but after I got into it I couldn’t put this book down! I love the way Flowers varied the narrator perspective and made it relatable to everyday life.

Great Story!
Revisado: 05-10-22
I was thrilled when I saw this title come out, as I had loved Jennifer Saint’s “Ariadne”. I found this book to be quite easy to listen to and enjoyed the story.
I found Clytemnestra’s grief for the loss of her daughter to be extremely palpable and touching. I’m not a mother myself, but I was brought to tears at Clytemnestra’s pain at the loss of her child. Her grief turned anger was so flawless that I found it quite hard to not sympathize with her.
Overall great read and would recommend for anybody that loved “Ariadne”, as well as anybody who enjoys Madeline Miller :)
