Historia
Life as manager of the magnificent resort of Castle Dysert on Ireland’s wild Atlantic coast is never dull, and Conor O’Shea’s life to date has taught him to be prepared for the unexpected. Even he however, is not ready for the gang from Bubbles O’Leary’s bar in New York. A motley crew, from spinster sisters of a certain age, to exhausted social workers, they are all in Ireland for one reason. The fact that this bunch of unusual people arrive during Ireland’s biggest matchmaking festival just adds to the intrigue.

Historia
Maya loves to cook with her grandmother - her Halmunee - to connect with the rich family history associated with each dish, a history Maya's mom would prefer stayed in the past. While cooking with Halmunee, something remarkable happens - the food creates such a strong memory that Maya and Halmunee are transported back in time through the memory itself. Halmunee explains that the women in her family have the gift of time travel through food and Maya can do it too, if she practices.

Time travel in the wake of Covid -19
Revisado: 04-23-20
While trapped in quarantine during coronavirus 2020, this book is a great change of pace giving the reader a mental look at travel to our past and the potential to look at our present and future in a different way. Great Korean food, bonds of family and friendship, and most of all HOPE. You don’t need to be a teen or young adult to enjoy The Golden Orchard.

Historia
A young woman is murdered in her Oslo flat. One finger has been severed from her left hand, and behind her eyelid is secreted a tiny red diamond in the shape of a five-pointed star - a pentagram, the devil’s star. Detective Harry Hole is assigned to the case with his long-time adversary Tom Waaler and initially wants no part in it. But Harry is already on notice to quit the force and is left with little alternative but to drag himself out of his alcoholic stupor and get to work. A wave of similar murders is on the horizon....

Narrator is perfect
Revisado: 12-29-18
Robin Sachs is great narrator for Harry Hole books. Have listened to first 4 books & he does the beat job of any narrator. The overall story is a bit more gruesome than others so far.

Historia
When his mother passed away at the age of 78, Sherman Alexie responded the only way he knew how: He wrote. The result is this stunning memoir. Featuring 78 poems and 78 essays, Alexie shares raw, angry, funny, profane, tender memories of a childhood few can imagine - growing up dirt poor on an Indian reservation, one of four children raised by alcoholic parents. Throughout, a portrait emerges of his mother as a beautiful, mercurial, abusive, intelligent, complicated woman.

2015 Affair is not mentioned
Revisado: 05-25-18
Such a scarred man- it is hard to read. Sherman acknowledges (Feb 28, 2018 press release) his consensual affair in 2015, and the impact on his wife, yet delays publishing the paperback version of the book. March 9, 2018 USA Today reports,
"He has since faced multiple allegations of sexual harassment and issued a statement acknowledging wrongdoing.
Without providing details, Alexie said "there are women telling the truth," apologizing to the people he has hurt."
I am sorry for his pain & hurt, but am disappointed that he covers himself in his memoir by saying he hasn't divulged everything. Generational abuse and abusing continues. I would keep the book if published as a novel. I can't support his actions by purchasing this book.

Narrator wrecks storyline
Revisado: 12-01-17
The narrator uses New York Yiddish to mimic Norwegian accent- sometimes sounds as if a Mafia hit man is talking when trying to sound Scandinavian. Overall would have been easier to listen to if no accents had been attempted.

Historia
Inara Erickson is exploring her deceased aunt's island estate when she finds an elaborately stitched piece of fabric hidden in the house. As she peels back layer upon layer of the secrets it holds, Inara's life becomes interwoven with that of Mei Lein, a young Chinese girl mysteriously driven from her home a century before. Through the stories Mei Lein tells in silk, Inara uncovers a tragic truth that will shake her family to its core - and force her to make an impossible choice.

Great fictionalized account with a few questions
Revisado: 10-25-16
Overall story is great to open eyes to Chinese Exclusion Act. Fiction has a few flaws with Anara and her "excessive student loans" coming from family that can fly her home for a weekend. Great grandfather, not great, great grandfather. Vera's husband's father is not "her" grandfather...
Narrator is a bit overly dramatic in sections with tension. I wish we could have learned more about those who adopt new family names.
This would be a great novel for high school students- to bring history to life here in U.S. , as well as to compare ethnic cleansing in other parts of the world.

Great story- check pronunciation of Hamline & Northrop
Revisado: 09-07-16
Story was thought provoking & kept me guessing until the end. As a native of Minnesota it was bothersome to have the narrator mispronounce Hamline & Northrop. Otherwise wonderful .
