Shit, Actually is a love letter and a breakup note all in one: to the films that shaped us and the ones that ruined us. More often than not, Lindy finds, they're one and the same.

This book makes me laugh.
Revisado: 07-18-22
I just can’t get enough of this wonderful book. Lindy West does so well at making fun of movies, and the movies she chose are almost every one of them having been seen by this reader. I personally loved her review of Love Actually, the essay being entitled “Shit Actually” of course, but this essay is oh so funny, inside of myself I’m laughing and relaxed every time I read that and the introductory essay on the Fugitive. I’m not sure if there’s any essay in here I didn’t like, none of this is any less than perfect to me.

Revisado: 11-16-21
I love this book. Though this book is a bit dated since social media platforms have changed the way they do thiings, this book will still introduce you to fandoms. I am a space and scifi fandom girl, but Star Wars has been bought out by Disney, and has expanded since this book was written. The music was awesome, but mind you I love this book because girls need a great way to learn about fan fiction and fandoms. Hey, Sam Mags, we need a second edition with updated things in it, though. I’ll still give this thing a five stars, especially because the narrators are awesome.

Historia
What happened to Islamic reform? Why have al Qaeda and Boko Haram become the faces of contemporary Islam? Why has the Arab Spring devolved into a battle over sharia law? Continuing her personal journey from a deeply religious Islamic upbringing to a post at Harvard and American citizenship, the New York Times best-selling author of Infidel and Nomad crafts a powerful call for an Islamic reformation as the only way to end the current wave of global violence and repression of women.

I’m not offended one bit
Revisado: 07-22-21
Ayaan Hirsi Ali writes such magnificent bulldozers on Islam and the reason we need to reform in this book. What are the bulldozers she’s using to dig deeper into Islam? She says we need to literally topple the call for Jihad, make things safer for women and sexual minorities, and stop trying to make the whole world Muslim. World domination of one religion is altogether impossible, and Hirsi Ali’s book shows us where reformation is needed and where it’s going. We literally need to bulldoze what we think we know about Islam in order to read this book. While some Muslims would be offended, I’m never really offended much by Ayaan’s writings. She is a very eloquent narrator here … better than any other.

Historia
In Prey, Ayaan Hirsi Ali presents startling statistics, criminal cases and personal testimony. Among these facts: In 2014, sexual violence in Western Europe surged following a period of stability. This violence isn’t a figment of alt-right propaganda, Hirsi Ali insists, even if neo-Nazis exaggerate it. It’s a real problem that Europe—and the world—cannot continue to ignore. She explains why so many young Muslim men who arrive in Europe engage in sexual harassment and violence, tracing the roots of sexual violence in the Muslim world.

Excellent eye opener
Revisado: 07-17-21
I found this book to be an eye opener for those people who think Europe is always going to be progressively more liberal, but making references to the Handmaid’s Tale, Ayaan Hirsi Ali points out that in the European Union nations and other places around, the pendulum is swinging in the negative direction. I’d give this book more than five stars, but can’t, but this book is a good read for those who want to learn more about the current state of Europe.

Historia
When police raided the Short Creek compound of the Fundamental Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1953, it soon became a political and publicity nightmare and eventually cost the governor of Arizona his job. From that point on, skittish public officials allowed the polygamist sect to practice its tenants unmolested for the next 50 years and turned a blind eye to child abandonment, kidnapping, statutory rape, incest, and massive tax and welfare fraud. But then Warren Jeffs, a new FLDS prophet, escalated the sect’s crimes to near madness.

I loved this book. There’s nothing else to say. Except that some of the details were a bit out of date upon press time. Since this book was written in 2011, I had to go do some internet research and such to find the updated stuff in the press. However, this was a joy to read.

Best field guide I’ve seen so far
Revisado: 12-18-20
In the book Unladylike, I found a lot of helpful and wonderful steps to making activism hapen, especially in the feminist sense. This is your guide to raising hell if needed, even with strong language included. Rabble rousing is something I want to do, but as a disabled woman, I find it hard to do because dudes with both ability and disability think it’s inappropriate. This book validates everything I want to do, including self determination rights and getting all the people together to fight for what’s right. The only thing I’d change is the infographs. Why not make it so that there are captions on the infographs? The PDF is great for those who can see pictures, but as a blind woman, I can’t look carefully at the map. Charts and flow charts should be tagged for accessibility. That’s the only thing I’d change.

When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity. Cloning, feel-good drugs, anti-aging programs, and total social control through politics, programming, and media: has Aldous Huxley accurately predicted our future? With a storyteller's genius, he weaves these ethical controversies in a compelling narrative that dawns in the year 632 A.F. (After Ford, the deity). When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity.

Excellent interpretation of a satirical moment
Revisado: 11-21-20
I’d say this book is a breath of fresh air because it’s better than listening to old record copies in a talking book library, but Michael York is a great narrator, especially when he has the expressions and brings characters to life. The only thing I would say is that not all Americans will understand, but I’ve read many British authors so I rated it the way I did because I totally understand Mr. York’s narration of this book.

Historia
More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

I loved this book, and it reminded me that not every totalitarian society is destined to stick around forever. It was a thriller from the outset, and I could not stop from the edge of my seat. I could not keep myself from thinking oh my God, this is happening or that is happening. This is an excellent conclusion of the Handmaid’s Tale series, but now the question is how will Hulu respond to this narrative.

breathtaking narration
Revisado: 07-18-20
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a good laugh, a good cry, and wants their breath taken away by Kate Winslet’s altogether magical performance of a story that though made into a movie, and though it was written long ago, it still feels great today and I couldn’t have been happier with what resulted. And the screams and sinister sounds of the Wormwoods and Trunchbull were extremely well crafted to get you on the edge of your seat. I rated the book as I did because once again, the storyteller isn’t myself, but I didn’t perhaps expect so much breathtaking subtle performance that literally had me almost knocked off my feet.
