Historia
Martin Dressler, son of an immigrant cigar maker, believes he can achieve anything if he works hard enough. At the turn of the century, he rises from the shadows of his father’s shop in New York City to become a powerful entrepreneur and builder of hotels. But, as he contemplates this land of almost limitless opportunity, his plans grow impossibly grand. Through the curve of Martin’s spectacular rise and eventual downfall in the business world, his tale remains a uniquely American one. Martin may not always control an empire, but he will always be able to dream.

It's shocking when a book like this wins awards. Not even George Guidall could save me from the boredom.

Historia
A vicious 15-year-old droog is the central character of this 1963 classic, a frightening fable about good and evil, and the meaning of human freedom. In Anthony Burgess' nightmare vision of the future, where the criminals take over after dark, the story is told by the central character, Alex, who talks in a brutal invented slang that brilliantly renders his and his friends' social pathology.

It's like listening to someone mixing two languages. I have no clue what hey are talking about. Turned it off after 20 min. I guess I'll never know what Kubrick left out of the movie.

The reader was great. The final chapter was what I wanted the entire book to be. The majority of the book was just pretty good.

Historia
Productivity and effective time management end with multitasking. The false idea that multitasking is productive has become even more prevalent and damaging to our productivity and well-being since the first edition of The Myth of Multitasking was published in 2008. In this revised and updated second edition, author and productivity expert Dave Crenshaw provides a solution for the chaos of distraction that multitasking creates - and a way to combat the temptation to constantly switch between tasks.

Historia
As a Hillary voter, a New York Times reporter, and frequent attendee at her local gay bars, Nellie Bowles fit right in with her San Francisco neighbors and friends—until she started questioning whether the progressive movement she knew and loved was actually helping people. When her colleagues suggested that asking such questions meant she was “on the wrong side of history,” Bowles did what any reporter worth her salt would do: she started investigating for herself. The answers she found were stranger—and funnier—than she expected.

Was so excited and it just didn't land
Revisado: 06-02-24
I love the premise of the book, because I identify as a Liberal who feels disenchanted with the last four years of Liberalism. But, her stories were just all over the place. The Robin DiAngelo story started off OK, then it just dragged on and on. I stopped the book 1/2 way through the one right after that. It was like one of my kids trying to tell me a story I just couldn't follow.

Historia
As one of the few black students in his philosophy program at Columbia University years ago, Coleman Hughes wondered why his peers seemed more pessimistic about the state of American race relations than his own grandparents–who lived through segregation. The End of Race Politics is the culmination of his years-long search for an answer.

We Need Coleman
Revisado: 06-01-24
Coleman Hughes and Alex O'Connor are the most important young intellectual voices we have. Dennett and Hitchens are dead, with their peers right behind. Coleman will pick up the torch.
As far as the book goes, you won't be shocked. It's what you probably feel already, but Coleman just articulates it better.

Historia
Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

Good Content, Boring Narrator
Revisado: 03-16-24
I've been exposed to a lot of this material in other books, but I still learned some things and if you're new to this topic then you'll learn a ton. Beware that the narrator is dry. Not sure if it was done one purpose, because the book is about sleep, but there is nothing engaging about the way he reads.

Another Boring Self Help Book
Revisado: 12-02-23
If you aren't an avid reader, you'll probably find it interesting. Everytime someone says, "You've got to read x book, it changed my life." I just know it's because they read one book every three years and it's the only new idea they've been exposed to in a long time. This is one of those books.

Historia
Teenage girls are taking courses of testosterone and disfiguring their bodies. Parents are undermined; experts are over-relied upon; dissenters in science and medicine are intimidated; free speech truckles under renewed attack; socialized medicine bears hidden consequences; and an intersectional era has arisen in which the desire to escape a dominant identity encourages individuals to take cover in victim groups. Every person who has ever had a skeptical thought about the sudden rush toward a non-binary future but been afraid to express it - this book is for you.
