I really love Holly (Haley, Harvest and whatever silly names her Great, great, great, great grandmother calls her). She's stubborn, crafty, and a brilliant witch. My only problem is the triangle which never resolved in three books. Maybe it will soon.

DNF and that's rare

In general, I love books. I read many genres. But this one just did me in. The male lead is a narcissist. The female is gullible and quite possibly a sex addict. Basically, while he's telling her all the reasons he should have everything he wants, including her, while refusing to properly end things with his other girl. I finally decided listening to it was bad for my mental health. Look, we women have to look out for one another, encouraging us toward relationships that might mirror this one won't accomplish that.

The stories are great. Intriguing ideas, fascinating world. 2/3 of the readers are bad, one ridiculously so.

I loved the series, especially the first girl, Noelle’s. But the other books were good too. The author is obviously talented. The choice of narrator for Morgan was odd. At least she could read though there was no difference in voices for characters except for the villains (kind of a dead giveaway). The last books (spans several POV’s including Gwenlynn, Nora, and Kennedy) had great storylines but a narrator so bad that it was distracting. I can’t for the life of me imagine why anyone would hire a reader who can’t pronounce anything. We’re not talking regional differences, she can’t pronounce gamut, debris or ricocheted. She mispronounced the name Yvonne, which isn’t an uncommon name at all and the name Adrienne, which is a seriously central character, so each time it came up, it was so damned distracting. I expect readers to screw up macabre, hardly anyone pronounces that right, but nearly a quarter of her reading was poorly pronounced words, which really distracts from the overall story.

Ignore the whiners

There are a bunch of reviews in here about how bad the story is, how Rachel has not grown, how she ignores advice, etc. The reality is, this story takes place only four years after the first in the series. Yeah, it’s been plenty more years that we’ve been reading them, but the timeline of the story and the timeline of reality are not the same.

The story is a good one. Rachel does have moments where she takes a couple of steps back. Everybody does that. In fact, whatever is your base personality doesn’t change a whole lot, even as you grow. At her core, Rachel is loyal, loving, fierce, and still a sick, weak little girl. The pain of her childhood will always be a part of her. She will always go a little nuts when people she truly loves are in danger. And when she is confused, she tends to be a little rash. She would not be Rachel, if those things did not remain true, just as Ivy would not be ivy if she failed to make a plan.

I was sad to see the backpedaling of Lee. I thought he’d made some miraculous growth, but I suppose I should’ve known that was not the case. I’m not sure why we did not get to see anything of Ivy’s main squeeze again I am also not entirely sure why Rachel and Ivy would still be clinging to Kiston. But all those things aside, this is a Hollows story, true to form. If you love the Hollows, I recommend it. If you don’t, we’ll don’t whine about why the character hasn’t changed completely.

As for the author, great job. My one tiny criticism is that I wish someone would point out how many times she uses the word “clearly” and how often it brings nothing to the sentence, or even adorns a phrase she never needed. Resist the urge to explain what’s perfectly illustrated, huh?

Great story, narrator must be on speed

I thought the last narrator was bad. I even have enjoyed performances by Kieran Culkin, but why the hell does he read this like he’s racing someone? He speaks so fast half the time I can’t understand his words.

Alyssa has never read the Dresden series before, Josh is a fan. Together they go chapter by chapter in deep dives. Alyssa is becoming a fan. If you love Harry Dresden, you’ll love this series.

A bit contrived

It’s an okay story. Author is clearly a panster. The eviction stuff set my teeth on edge — you can’t just ignore an eviction. But if you don’t think too much, it is mildly entertaining. I’ve read worse. I’ll probably try the next and see if the author improved
