Historia
What would happen if a shy introvert lived like a gregarious extrovert for one year? If she knowingly and willingly put herself in perilous social situations that she’d normally avoid at all costs? Writer Jessica Pan intends to find out. With the help of various extrovert mentors, Jessica sets up a series of personal challenges (talk to strangers, perform stand-up comedy, host a dinner party, travel alone, make friends on the road, and much, much worse) to explore whether living like an extrovert can teach her lessons that might improve the quality of her life.

Good, not great
Revisado: 08-25-19
I'm a huge introvert, but I had trouble connecting with this book. It felt too forced, too contrived, too pat. I think maybe there is a danger in writing a book like this about oneself that is too self-depricating. You're left wondering about the perspectives of others in her life. Since it's hard to sympathize with her, you're kind of wondering what the author's redeeming qualities are and why people like her. Maybe I'm just projecting.
I think it would have been less annoying if she had tried to get out of her shell in a way that benefitted others, like volunteering to visit old or sick people, rather than everything being self absorbed.
That said, I am inspired to try to make more friends, so I'm glad I read it.

Historia
Most children go through a dinosaur phase. Learning all the tongue-twisting names, picking favourites based on ferocity, armour, or sheer size. For many kids this love of ‘terrible lizards’ fizzles out at some point between starting and leaving primary school. All those fancy names slowly forgotten, no longer any need for a favourite. For all those child dino fanatics who didn’t grow up to become paleontologists, dinosaurs seem like something out of mythology. They are dragons, pictures in books, abstract, other, extinct.

Better than I anticipated! More like this, please!
Revisado: 08-16-19
I had low expectations going in, so I was pleasantly by surprised how perfect this was. It has enough technical detail to be interesting but never boring. I'm also very impressed that Mr. Garrod narrated the piece himself--if his career as a scientist doesn't work out, he can definitely have a career in audio journalism. I guess that is why he is a professor of Professor of Evolutionary Biology and Science Engagement--who knew there was such a thing?
I have not thought about dinosaurs since I left school, and I feel like this Audible Original got me up to speed on the latest science and helped me to feel more connected to planet Earth. Bravo!

Worth listening to for the narration alone!

What did you love best about My Year of Meats?
I'm not normally a fiction fan, but I'm giving it a try, so I liked the fact that this book managed to incorporate a lot of factual information in the context of an interesting narrative.
What does Anna Fields bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I don't know how much I would have enjoyed reading this book. The character voices that Anna Fields created were incredible. It was such a pleasure to listen to!
