Historia
The orphaned Francis Marion Tarwater and his cousin, Rayber, defy the prophecy of their dead uncle - that Tarwater will become a prophet and will baptize Rayber's young son, Bishop. A series of struggles ensue, as Tarwater fights an internal battle against his innate faith and the voices calling him to be a prophet, while Rayber tries to draw Tarwater into a more “reasonable” modern world. Both wrestle with the legacy of their dead relatives and lay claim to Bishop's soul.

Brilliant tough novel. Unflinching. I can't say what it means, but I think I can feel it

Historia
Jesus was a skilled storyteller and perceptive teacher who used parables from everyday life to effectively convey his message and meaning. Life in first-century Palestine was very different from our world today, and many traditional interpretations of Jesus' stories ignore this disparity and have often allowed anti-Semitism and misogyny to color their perspectives. In this wise, entertaining, and educational book, Amy-Jill Levine offers a fresh, timely reinterpretation of Jesus' narratives.

Erudite
Revisado: 05-02-23
Extremely well-considered, well-researched, well-phrased. It took me hours to admit how repetitious the text is, how tenuous some of her assumptions.

Historia
Although Christian believers agreed with one another that the Bible was authoritative and that it should be interpreted through commonsense principles, there was rampant disagreement about what Scripture taught about slavery. Furthermore, most Americans continued to believe that God ruled over the affairs of people and nations, but they were radically divided in their interpretations of what God was doing in and through the war.

It makes complete sense that slavery was considered so. I wish justice would receive the same attention today.

Historia
In this provocative tell-all, David Gushee gives an insider's look at the frictions and schisms of evangelical Christianity, based on his experiences that began with becoming a born-again Southern Baptist in 1978 to being kicked out of evangelicalism in 2014 for his stance on LGBT inclusion in the church. But Gushee's religious pilgrimage proves even broader than that, as he leads his listener through his childhood experiences in Roman Catholicism, his difficult days at the liberal Union Seminary in New York, his encounters with the Christian Right, and more. In telling his story, Gushee speaks to the cultural divisions of a generation.

Moving, Honest
Revisado: 01-10-23
I was raised Seventh-Day Adventist, conservative but with a mindset different to that described here. Now I fellowship with John MacArthur types. They are a trial and a blessing. I think probably we should all seek to love and understand the other ... This is a good, interesting book. Well-rendered. My only complaint, Mr. Gushee can sound a little stuck on himself.

Historia
Millions are getting lost in the evangelical maze: inerrancy, indifference to the environment, deterministic Calvinism, purity culture, racism, LGBTQ discrimination, male dominance, and Christian nationalism. They are now conscientious objectors, deconstructionists, perhaps even "none and done". As one of America's leading academics speaking to the issues of religion today, David Gushee offers a clear assessment and a new way forward for disillusioned post-evangelicals.

A lot to consider
Revisado: 12-16-22
One can't write off evangelicals because they are Christian brothers and sisters. I don't think Mr. Gusher is without bias himself. Still I believe his version of things and want to use it to feel affirmed rather than vindictive.

I think this will help. I don't know enough about the subject to fully evaluate. Mr. Jones clearly has opinions and perhaps biases. Will need to hear other voices.
