Master of every board, computer and strategy. Bored with success, Gurgeh travels to the Empire of Azad, cruel and incredibly wealthy, to try their fabulous game...a game so complex, so like life itself, that the winner becomes emperor. Kind of a slog..
Revisado: 11-25-24
I mean, it shares a problem common to a lot of Stephenson stuff, but it starts out cyberpunk, then gets bogged down in folklore/mythology stuff and somewhat grinds to a halt. Took me a long time to finish this one because I just kept getting bored.

You could say it all started with the red-eyed tramp with the slimy fingers who put the wind up Neville, the part-time barman, something rotten. Or when Archroy's wife swapped his trusty Morris Minor for five magic beans while he was out at the rubber factory.

Overall liked it except that some of the sound effects were literally painful to me, and overall I felt the sound effects were more of a distraction than an enhancement in many places.

Historia
Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

Highly entertaining and meta, not fine literature but the best kind of fluff

I have no idea how this guy cranks out so many fun snappy little reads that cross many genres. Somewhat crosses into guilty pleasure territory, and seems explicitly written for movie or TV adaptation, but a lot of fun, somewhat like a more grown up version of David Wong, Similar sensibility to Cracked but for a mindset 10 years older.

Historia
A Voyage to Arcturus has inspired, enchanted, and unsettled audiences for decades. It is simultaneously an epic quest across one of the most unusual and brilliantly depicted alien worlds ever conceived, a profoundly moving journey of discovery into the metaphysical heart of the universe, and a shockingly intimate excursion into what makes us human and unique.

One of the weirdest things I've ever read.
Revisado: 03-10-24
I am a big fan of early gothic horror, scifi and psychedelia, and still , this was a very difficult read. It's such a disjointed, absurd tableau-like story, though it does somewhat -feel- like art deco to me, despite no obvious references. I would be very surprised if this wasn't Jodorowsky's primary influence. Definitely lots of transcendentalist influence, and it irks me to recognize some stylistic genes shared with Rand. Not sure if I liked it or not, but it at least got me thinking. I would sort of call it horror, but it's a pretty nontraditional form of that. But it's far too dark to call fantasy. And though it probably gets classified as sci-fi, there was barely a handful of references to science or technology. I would almost call it religious in nature. And weird cults were in their heyday at the time, so I'm not sure if this was more an allegory, a documentation of a rambling fever dream, or an earnest attempt to start another sect.

Historia
At once profoundly personal and far-reaching, Exit Interview with My Grandmother serves as a meditation on the beginning of a young woman’s life and the series of questions that arise from examining love, loss, family, memory, and death. Moving between cities and centuries, Meyersohn probes her family's Jewish history and her grandparents' relationships in part to decipher her own young queer relationships, but also to examine how we ought to behave in the face of a world riddled with uncertainty and doubt.

A meandering pile of sentimental nostalgia
Revisado: 09-06-23
About an hour into it, I realized that this was never really going to improve, and bailed. I thought it was gonna be more philosophical or historical, or at least interesting. This is the kind of incredibly boring upper middle class blandness you'd expect people who drive volvos and shop at whole foods would be into. Maybe the people who watch HGTV would like it, but it was painfully tedious to me.

Boring bait and switch, formulaic depressing porn
Revisado: 08-22-23
This is one of those things that looks like it's gonna be an actual story, but it's actually just another copy of the swedish detective stories, with lengthy depressing sex scenes, trying to be shocking, but ending up just tedious. I quit halfway through. Daytime TV fare, if it wasn't so explicit.

wraps up the series, but a slog to get through.
Revisado: 08-10-23
This one is more a romance novel than anything else, and is really tedious for those who were into this series for the intrigue and action. But it does tie up loose ends, and as a completist, I made it through, after much losing attention and interest.

The first story was OK, but these are all basically the same story, seem to be written by someone with no real experience in what they're writing, doesn't really deal with the headspace stuff at all, and the characters aren't anything like real people. The use of language is like a book for jr high students, if it wasn't for the subject matter. I had to quit halfway thru story 4, skimmed 5 and it was more of the same.
