Beautifully told story of families suffering from an inherited medical disorder and the researchers looking for the cause. The author uses the story of his own extended family and of several others to make this an unusually poignant and affecting book. The writing is outstanding and the narration is perfect.

Such an important subject, but the author completely missed the mark. The characters were so trite and contrived it made my teeth hurt. Soap opera dialogue. Hauling out the old “they spat on me and called me a baby killer at the airport” line. Every class and kind of human in this book is a stereotype. The women who served our country in Viet Nam deserve so much more than this silly book.

The writing is quite good, a really disturbing accounting of a serial killer who eluded detection for many years. Because the book contains an extensive amount of dialogue from characters who are nearly all male, the book would have better served with a male narrator. It was distracting to hear an otherwise excellent narrator strain to sound like (multiple) men in numerous interviews between law enforcement, prosecutors and the perpetrator.

The writing in this book is really extraordinary, which does justice to this complex, tragic story. I listened to the entire book over three days. Im still thinking about the choices that parents, teachers, and healthcare professionals made in trying to help Michael Laudor. Could anyone have prevented the violence that occurred? It’s a book that you’ll be thinking about long after it ends.

This is the kind of self congratulatory conversation you have with coworkers at a bar when you successfully finish a project. It wasn’t interesting to me at all, even though I’m a fan of Dateline.

I really like this author, and this book, like his other novel Little Ghost, does not disappoint.
Engaging, complex story with great characters and many twists and turns.
I didn’t like the narrator at all. Overacting to the point of being very distracting and silly. Annoying! She’s a stage actor with no subtlety, not a book narrator.

This book was recommended to me, which I appreciate since I would normally pass up a book with a supernatural element. I binged listened to it on a long plane ride, and couldn’t put it down when I got home. Compelling twisty story, perfect narration and definitely wins the “best ghost” award! I’ll look for other books by this author.

I’m a fan of writer Peter May and narrator Peter Forbes. This story was fun, fast and intricate. I enjoyed the detail about winemaking.
As usual, Peter Forbes’ beautifully paced narration in Scottish accented English and lovely French was a pleasure to listen to. I’d follow that voice anywhere. But, whoa boy, Mr Forbes needs to work on his American accent. The men and women of the USA don’t ALL have clipped, high, nasal voices. Has he been modeling his American accent on Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory? Still love ya Mr Forbes, but please smooth it out and bring it down a notch or two…😁

This is by far the best book on Trump, his election, and the immediate aftermath of his loss in 2020 to Biden. Great reporting and writing, and the narration is also excellent.

The author should be congratulated for his volunteer work helping to solve serious crimes—especially for the ethical, sincere, sensitive and fully committed way he does so. The chapter advising other would-be volunteer crime solvers is excellent. He shows respect for victims, families and law enforcement. This book will be very interesting to folks interested in solving cold cases.
The book is a bit repetitive, skimming the surface of too many cases and lines of inquiry. It reads like a long blog post. He’s not a great writer, but few people are, and because his work is important I give him a big pass on literary criticism. I was shocked at how few murders are solved in the United States! Our police, prosecutors and courts are overwhelmed
and he makes a compelling argument that skilled and ethical citizens can help.
