Historia
When Harland Cain holds a .45 automatic to his head and bears down slowly upon the trigger, he experiences a profound sense of control over his destiny for the first time in his life. He savors the moment and imagines the click of the hammer, the explosion, and the bullet spiraling through the barrel before everything turns black. It's then he hears the out-of-control screaming of tires on the pavement, followed by the sickening sound of metal crashing against concrete. He lays down the pistol and crosses his yard in that predawn darkness to find a young boy, bloody and dazed.

Oration was perfect for this story
Revisado: 01-11-23
Nice little story, some trigger warning for abuse early in the story. At times a little contrived, but overall well-written and exceptional narration. The voices perfectly matched the story style.

A Well-written look into a Heartbreaking issue
Revisado: 08-24-20
I don't feel like I can do justice to a review of this book, but I'll try. It was (emotionally) hard to read. The elements that reference the sexual interaction between this young girl and her abuser put you exactly in her place and broke my heart as a woman and a mother. The author did an exceptional job bringing out the internal conflict and confusion felt by the main character, just perfection. The AUDIBLE performer made Vanessa even more real. As a reader I could feel Vanessa as her young self navigating uncertain times and again as her derailed older self.
I wanted so bad for this character to fully redeem and while she does in her own way, it was painful watching her get there and seeing her continued bad choices.
When you read this, try not to be put off by the graphic parts, but take in the well-crafted interactions between Vanessa and her therapist and Vanessa and herself.

Historia
It is the turn of the 18th century in Frankfurt, Germany, and young Gutle and Meir Amschel Rothschild struggle to establish themselves in the cramped, restricted Judengasse. But when Meir’s talents as a novice banker catch the attention of a German prince, Meir is afforded entrée into the European world of finance and nobility, and the Rothschilds’ lives are changed forever. As proud as Gutle is of her husband’s success, she is also cautious - very much aware of the fact that her husband’s rise is tied to his patrons’ willingness to “see past” his Jewishness.

Hard starter

The story was overall interesting, however I listened in spurts, so perhaps that is why it took me until nearly the end to find entertainment. The history of the family was vast and impactful.

Well-written, but annoying storyline
Revisado: 07-03-20
I loved the first book, LIFE AFTER LIFE, and the diction in both books, but the characters in this book were mostly depressing and with few redeeming qualities. Teddy, who seemed so charming, hopeful and... touched by goodness... was pathetic and weak in this book. Maybe that's the point. Maybe it's the reality of life as one grows up, that things aren't always so pretty or gifted or "touched". I found his marriage, his children and his entire post-war life so... sad. I want to give this book 3 ☆ because I didn't like the people, but that's probably not fair. Any book that elicits a strong reaction to characters and plot is a good book with good writing, no? Everything about this book, subject matter, research, word choice, flow, structure, diction, everything is very good. I just didn't like the people as I thought I would. Though the ending was almost a relief, in response. So 4☆.

Historia
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

I did not like the orator at 1st, but he improved immensely after the first few chapters. This was an interesting story that was not easily figured out as you read along. The story bounces around eras, but this was not distracting. Loved this book
