What a Happy Surprise
Revisado: 07-15-23
I had read the first Book in this series (Relic), and tried to watch the movie--could not get through either of them. Don't know how I lucked out and started to listen to this one; just glad I did. Loved the story and the Pendergast character, My only issue was with the filler, not a fan of filler. Instead of, "her long golden hair, tied by a pale blue ribbon, blew in the gentle breeze: give me, "her blonde hair was stunning."

Not the Right Narrator for This Book
Revisado: 01-28-21
A basic run-of-the-mill young girl trying to prove herself in the FBI story. Roxanne Hernandez is a gifted narrator and is well suited to many many books, but this is not one of them. The heroine was thrown away as a baby (literally in a garbage bin), raised in multiple abusive group homes, and the victim of a serial killer as a teen. Yet the narrator talks in a soft, sweet, ingenue voice that is totally inappropriate for this main character.

Historia
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Surprised by this Good Book/Story
Revisado: 02-27-17
What about Zachary Quinto’s performance did you like?
Absolutely great. Loved his ability to read men and women in such a way you had no doubt which gender was speaking.
Any additional comments?
Excellent short story. I was pleasantly surprised by it and gave the discs to my son-in-law who also enjoyed it.

Historia
Melanie is a very special girl. Dr. Caldwell calls her "our little genius". Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up.

Unexpected Happy Surprise
Revisado: 05-18-16
If you could sum up The Girl with All the Gifts in three words, what would they be?
Hungry Zombies Attack
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Girl with All the Gifts?
Dr Caldwell, having no one else to leave her research findings too, leaves it all to subject #1.
Which scene was your favorite?
Most endearing was the scene where Kieran Gallagher (whose own upbringing was abusive) sits down to read to Melanie. Melanie acts distant but Private Gallagher sees her straining to see the pictures.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I had nightmares about zombies. Oh yeah, pretty extreme.
Any additional comments?
Very well written. Admire the writer.

Rated it an All Star Book!
Revisado: 12-10-15
What made the experience of listening to The Cuckoo's Calling the most enjoyable?
The book is so well written with an exceptionally good plot. Robert Glenister is absolutely brilliant as the narrator; adding much to the entire experience.
What other book might you compare The Cuckoo's Calling to and why?
The last book I enjoyed listening to this much was "Murder as a Fine Art." by David Morrell. Read by Matthew Wolf. The period and settings are nothing alike but the mysteries in both are top knotch.
Which character – as performed by Robert Glenister – was your favorite?
The main character - Cormoran Strike.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Anxiousness to find out what happened and who did it.
Any additional comments?
Repeating what several other listeners wrote. I knew nothing about this book but took a chance on it because of the great reviews. So glad I did because it was one of the most enjoyable audiobooks I've ever listened. too. Great voice changes from Robert Glenister made it a real find. The fact it is nothing like the Harry Potter books made it a delightful surprise. So well done. Bravo all around.

My Favorite S. King Book and First of a Trilogy
Revisado: 07-02-15
If you could sum up Mr. Mercedes in three words, what would they be?
Good vs Evil
What about Will Patton’s performance did you like?
Change of characters excellent! No problem telling who was speaking. He helped to make this novel and hold my attention. The emotions he put into Brady Hartsfield's character blew me away. Made his character believably insane.
If you could take any character from Mr. Mercedes out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Started to say Janie Trelawney but toss up between her and Jerome Robinson. Guess because both had their heads screwed on right and they had a sense of humor that would have been entertaining.
Any additional comments?
Excellent book. Agree with one reviewer that there is a lot of scene and action description but no one was holding me down with my arm pinned behind me to read that. Skimmed along those parts doing the Evelyn Wood technique and had no problems. All in all this is a GREAT novel and I'm so happy the second installment has come out. Can't wait to see what Bill Hodges will do in the next one and if Holly and Jerome are still his sidekicks.

What made the experience of listening to The Last Apprentice: Rage of the Fallen the most enjoyable?
Good story and good narration.
Any additional comments?
Enjoyed this series quite awhile ago, up through the last one written. Checked back for a period of time and then forgot about them. By accident, ran across the series again in Oct. '12 and realized there were new ones to enjoy. The new ones are better than ever! Great book to take your mind off everything else. Narrator is superb and I am glad he is back to read the rest of the series.

Historia
Gemma James is adjusting to professional and personal changes - and a future now intricately entwined with Duncan Kincaid. But her new responsibilities are put to the test when she is placed in charge of a particularly brutal homicide: The lovely young wife of a wealthy antiques dealer has been found murdered on fashionable Notting Hill. This case sets off warning bells for Duncan: It's far too similar to an unsolved murder in which an antiques dealer was killed in precisely the same way.

Revisado: 07-19-12
Love the way Deborah Crombie braids the past and present together throughout the book. It took great skill to write a novelette within a novel that takes you through some fifty years of storyline so well. All believable and interesting. Many surprises in this one and a bitter sweet ending.

When a body is discovered floating in a Thames river lock one dreary morning, Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and Sergeant Gemma James are summoned from Scotland Yard to Chiltern Hills. The dead man is Connor Swann, son-in-law of two of London's most renowned opera personalities. And prints on the corpse's neck suggest that Swann was strangled.

This will NOT be my last Crombie!
Revisado: 05-25-12
Confused by other reviewers' remarks and curious as to why some could not get into the characters of this novel. Thoroughly enjoyed this one, got more into the characters in this one than in book #2, which I also enjoyed. Looking forward to starting book #4 next week.
Will be interesting when I get to the audios that change narrators to the Gemma James character as the primary. Normally pass up women narrators (not because they are not good - some are the best) because I don't hear a high voice as well as a low one and tend to miss words.
I'd recommend this series of non-violent murder mysteries to all that like that genre. And, thanks to Audible for adding the "Series" feature, makes it easy to go through them.
