Allow yourself to be pulled into the warm, lapping waves of a gentle YA lost-friends reunion story braided with adorable strands of young love.

So much better to enjoy the blackest depths of despair when Sarah rips your still-breaking heart out on the unforgiving reef you always suspected was lurking just below the surface. Let your salt tears and rich blood soak the sand of the beach in the Sea Witch’s cove.

This book got me through a chunk of Utah and most of Idaho…and I’m immensely grateful to Becca and her coaches for the past two years of guidance on my writing quest.

Tourmaline is my favorite character from the first season. Karla was the only one who embraced her role without even a hint of melodrama. I’m extremely pleased she voiced this story. She managed an authentic characterization for Vignette, too, which was a lovely touch.

Stephanie wrote an amazing prequel that feels like it was part of the original script. (It might have been for all I know.) An enjoyable homage to the hints of history between Tourmaline and Vignette in season one.

The reviewers who complain of too much sex must have never watched the show. 🙄 Stephanie does an incredible job setting up the tragedy of Tourmaline’s future life as a prostitute. I do wish she’d managed to work in Tourmaline’s skill at drawing. And I do hope Tourmaline gets a bigger role and the chance to shine as a poet in season two.

Loved the narrator!

The narrator is FIVE star. She deserves a medal, a statue , and a parade for reading the whole thing to the end with a straight face and verve. I could listen to her lovely lilt read me almost anything, including Internet RFCs or the long-forgotten phone book.

But despite getting past the inexplicable finger-rape of a fire witch (who let herself be chained up and abused without even trying to use her magic after watching... never mind), I struggled in to 75% through SIX major POV shifts with no meaning in sight of the blind seer who just likes being blind despite the opportunity to be healed.

I just couldn’t anymore. I quit.

I still wonder whether the fire witch is truly dead or magically befriended the Loch Ness monster that came to eat her… I’m just not willing to suffer more out-of-character, seemingly irrelevant randomness and nonsense from the cast for the sake I’d The Plot™. Sorry. Not sorry.

Great story. Desperately needs a producer.

Suanne delivers a difficult story that’s all the more important because it’s challenging. Full marks for a great story well told. The parts of the story that stalled for me are in MY head and are my own challenges to overcome, not the story’s. Suanne earned every word.

Ayesha has a lovely voice. But she desperately needs an experienced producer and some more vocal training. Mispronunciations, wife variations in tonal and audio quality, as well as poor cuts make it hard for me to recommend the audio version.

If you like old-timey radio plays. . .

If you like old-timey radio plays. . .and you haven't listened to any of the novels yet, you may love this. Full Disclosure: I don't. I already have. Sad.

The voice actors do a great job. The sound effects were cool. The script was probably lovingly crafted by someone who actually likes radio plays. It's just that none of it worked for me. I was expecting a well-narrated novella.

I totally get the radio play writing conceit: it's very different from a novel narration on purpose. I just didn't expect it. And because I don't prefer it, I would've skipped it if it'd been sold to me as a radio play. Also, I gagged on the over-the-top flapper-era dialogue with an attempt at making it hard-boiled noir to boot that was much more ______ than it ever was in the novels.

The most jarring is the voice of Jake Sullivan. Radically different speech pattern. Radically different character. Radically different tone and voice. Hard to believe the script was written by Larry. . .It feels like a script written by someone who loves radio plays and the '20s/'30s time period more than they love Larry's novels. If I hadn't listened to the fabulously narrated novels, I wouldn't care. If Jake had been given a different name, I might've been able to forgive the rest. But it broke the story for me, and I endured it anyway.

There were continuity problems with Jake's powers that also threw me. For example, why does he never fly in the first or second novel if he can allegedly fly in this prequel story? But I've gone on long enough. . .

I was surprised to love Nell more than Jane, but I do. . . Faith deals fairly with a number of issues and concepts that most folks would find difficult to present without prejudice. Best of all, she's able to give us empowered female characters that aren't all kick-ass-and-take-names.

Khristine, too, delivers a completely new set of characters believably and well, along with some memorable old friends. She could read me the phone book (apologies for the Stone Age metaphor) and I'd love listening to it.

I appreciate the attempt to deliver on the many story promises in an unexpected way, but. . .not all of them were 5-star satisfying. Still a good listen, and Oliver's performance is amazing. (Whoever did the production and audio edits made a couple glaring mistakes, though.)

My antipathy toward the time period ('20s and '30s plus the added sin of alternative history) would normally prevent me from even picking this up.

A strong recommendation from a friend, and the quality of Larry's other work, induced me to give it a try. Needless to say, I'll be listening to all the rest of the series, too.

I might still have successfully hated the book if not for Bronson's extraordinary characterization (combined with Larry's skill at creating very sympathetic heroes). I'll definitely give any book Bronson narrates the benefit of the doubt in the future.
