Great reading for unsettled times
Revisado: 04-24-25
Since I'm listening less to the news (too depressing), I'm reading and listening more. This was an entertaining and light-hearted book that I'm recommending to my friends. If you like dogs, you'll like this book.

Historia
When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away. Then everything changes when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet.

Another good story line by Taylor
Revisado: 06-13-23
I will read anything by Dennis Taylor. While the plotline of Outland isn’t as creative as the Bobiverse, it’s an interesting take on the apocalyptic theme. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Historia
Mirror Image, a complex, erotic novel of suspense, is the first in a series of mysteries featuring Dr. Daniel Rinaldi, a psychologist who consults with the Pittsburgh Police. His specialty is treating victims of violent crime, those who’ve survived an armed robbery or kidnapping but whose traumatic experience still haunts them. Kevin Merrick, a college student and victim of an armed assault, is one of these people.

Interesting Lead Character
Revisado: 01-07-13
Where does Mirror Image rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
A little better than average.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plot had many twists, and the fact that the lead character was not a rock-em-sock-em heroic action figure made it more interesting.
What aspect of William Hughes’s performance would you have changed?
The voice was a bit too monotone.
Any additional comments?
There are few books set in Pittsburgh, so it was interesting to hear about the various neighborhoods.

Enigmatic and sexy, Professor Gabriel Emerson is a well-respected Dante specialist by day, but by night he devotes himself to an uninhibited life of pleasure. He uses his notorious good looks and sophisticated charm to gratify his every whim, but is secretly tortured by his dark past and consumed by the profound belief that he is beyond all hope of redemption. When the sweet and innocent Julia Mitchell enrolls as his graduate student, his attraction and mysterious connection to her not only jeopardizes his career, but sends him on a journey in which his past and his present collide.

Character Development
Revisado: 12-05-12
What did you like best about Gabriel's Inferno? What did you like least?
I liked that it was set in Toronto, which isn't a common city for a plot based in an academic setting. I do think that the main female character should have been better developed. I found her to be so mousy, meek and inexperienced that it was not plausible that she was also a brilliant student who had been accepted by Harvard, and by a well-known professor as a thesis advisor. I struggled to resolve this contradiction as I listened to the book.
What about John Morgan’s performance did you like?
Excellent voice for narration. He brought out the strong character of the professor, yet also managed to capture the young and inexperienced personality of the female lead.
