a disappointment
Revisado: 10-03-21
I was really looking forward to the third Elena Standish novel but this book was a genuine disappointment. The crime that must be solved happens right away and then for the rest of the book nothing happens. All the characters just talk to each other about the accused. "He couldn't have done it! Do you think he did it? I can't believe he did it! How could you think he did!?" It was relentlessly boring. And Elena, as a supposed MI6 agent, forgot all of her training (if she ever had any) and behaved like the bewildered young society girl she presents as. I usually am generous in my assessments as my only real goal is distraction and entertainment when I listen to a book, but this one had me shouting at the speakers in my car to "get on with it already!"

Historia
England, 1936. The year began with the death of a beloved king and the ascension of a charismatic young monarch, sympathetic to the needs of the working class, glamorous and single. By year’s end, the world would be stunned as it witnessed that new leader give up his throne in the name of love, just as the unrest and violence that would result in a Second World War were becoming impossible to ignore.

narration was hard to listen to. story was boring
Revisado: 07-12-21
the story was tedious and boring. the narrating went from a whisper to a shout. if you set your listening volume to be able to tolerate the shouting you couldn't hear the whispers... Very hard to listen to...

Historia
In the eerie wasteland of Dartmoor, Sherlock Holmes summons his devoted wife and partner, Mary Russell, from her studies at Oxford to aid the investigation of a death and some disturbing phenomena of a decidedly supernatural origin. Through the mists of the moor there have been sightings of a spectral coach made of bones carrying a woman long-ago accused of murdering her husband - and of a hound with a single glowing eye.

not my favorite. kind of slow to get started, and the dreary moor was a dreary setting. In the end all the pieces came together in an intriguing way, but if you are new to the series don't start here.

Historia
It's 1803, and an adolescent Nadya is determined not to follow in her overbearing Ukrainian mother's footsteps. She's a horsewoman, not a housewife. When Tsar Paul is assassinated in St. Petersburg and a reluctant and naive Alexander is crowned emperor, Nadya runs away from home and joins the Russian cavalry in the war against Napoleon. Disguised as a boy and riding her spirited stallion, Alcides, Nadya rises in the ranks, even as her father begs the tsar to find his daughter and send her home.

well read and well written.

very well performed. the characters are believable and the historical setting is authentic. The hallmark of a great book is that it lingers in one's heart, mind, and soul. this one does.
