Historia
Patch Simmons has decided that this is the year he will get a boyfriend, so it's goodbye to his French pen-pal Jean-Pierre and hello to the world! Unfortunately, the only other "out" boys in his school year are dating each other, so finding a boyfriend isn't going to be easy... Until fate finally intervenes and two new mysterious boys join drama club: Peter, who’s just moved from New York (very chic) and his best friend, Sam. Patch is confident that one of them (although either of them will do!) will be his first boyfriend.

I have never laughed out loud so much listening to an audiobook in my life. The laughter came with such a warm glow because the characters and the author are so authentic and lovely. I will read anything he is inspired to write in the future. And a bonus 3 minutes of heartfelt genuinely funny acknowledgements. Yes! A big silly romance is for me!

What a wonderfully written story full of heart, humor, and a touch of magic. Can’t wait to see what this gifted author does next! And the narrators are as good as I expected which is to say exceptional!

Incredibly boring
Revisado: 06-05-24
Monotone narration on simple dialogue. There was no depth to the characters. No build up or intensity or anything to draw in the reader to connect. Repetitive over and over bringing up a theme for example - is magic and imagination good for kids - then explaining it on and on in each character’s head versus creating a story you live in and letting the relationship between the characters develop. This was just bad. Not the witty dialog and world building I am used to with Kleypas.

Sadie Montgomery never saw what was coming . . . Literally! One minute she’s celebrating the biggest achievement of her life—placing as a finalist in the North American Portrait Society competition—the next she’s lying in a hospital bed diagnosed with a “probably temporary” condition known as face blindness. She can see, but every face she looks at is now a jumbled puzzle of disconnected features. Imagine trying to read a book upside down and in another language. This is Sadie’s new reality.

Unlikable one dimensional characters
Revisado: 05-30-24
I accidentally got this book not realizing this was the author of Happiness for Beginners. Soon into this, I realized as I felt the same ick feeling of one main whiny unlikable character surrounded everywhere by one dimensional caricatures of the worst most vapid family members and the best most perfect neuropsychologist and on and on. So very boring and to me unreadable. Again a woman in self imposed misery putting up with everyone being terrible while being pretty awful herself. Dialogue was redundant and over the top stubborn, uncaring, or villainous. I am incredulous at the popularity of these books. This is not for me I guess.

Alexis Hall really does have a unique voice. I enjoy his books, though they have long periods of rambling on. I also laugh out loud more than in any other books. Overall, this was a good listen with a cozy feel that left me smiling.

Historia
Sasha has had it. She cannot bring herself to respond to another inane, “urgent” email or participate in the corporate employee joyfulness program. She hasn’t seen her friends in months. Sex? Seems like a lot of effort. Even cooking dinner takes far too much planning. Sasha has hit a wall. Armed with good intentions to drink kale smoothies, try yoga, and find peace, she heads to the seaside resort she loved as a child. But it’s the off season, the hotel is in a dilapidated shambles, and she has to share the beach with the only other occupant: a grumpy guy named Finn.

tiresome listen
Revisado: 03-21-24
2 1/2 hours in, the story had gone nowhere. Everything felt exhausting and difficult. I believe the hotel characters were meant to be quirky but they were just utterly frustratingly inept or so old it was nonsensical. Maybe it is build up so you feel just as burnt out as the character by the time any relief is on the way, but it just felt like such a slog to go on. I then looked back and realized I had actually read all the way through two of her other books over 5 years ago with similar feelings. The writing is just very uninteresting and a downer for me.

Too much angst & guilt for me - spoilers
Revisado: 03-14-24
The end betrayed what was an extraordinary book. The author is an absolutely fantastic narrator! Amazing surprise of a book I had heard was a story with female pleasure as the protagonist with the movie coming out. The first half did seem to put a much needed spotlight on women honoring their own happiness. Unfortunately, the second half became a spiral down into guilt and self-sacrifice which was just so much worse as it did not for me seem to fit the tone of where this book was going. Being that this author has only written one novel, it is my mistake for having any assumptions. I don’t need an HEA, but I also don’t want to spend hours in gut wrenching heartache, so I did stop reading 2/3 in and skipped to the last 20 minutes which made me so happy I saved myself that emotional mess. I fast forwarded through most of that end too as it was so over the top. I may skip the movie as well unless I hear they have decided on a more satisfying end for these two very interesting and mature people so clearly in love and in a great relationship!

Bland…just so dull
Revisado: 03-08-24
This was just two guys constantly thinking about how fit the other was and flirting was every middle school quip the author could think of it seemed to me. No connection, no chemistry. Silly and halfway through it became apparent it would just meander on through immaturity to some kind of supposed HEA and I was just done as I realized I did not care and was yawning.
The narrator has such a bizarre tone drawing out nasally every line. While still grating, I got used to it in another novel I was listening to set in the 40s when it sort of became a fit for the time and the characters. Here, it just sounded like two old whiny guys with practically the same voice and not a 24 year old rock star & 20 year old guy. It was just really wierd and a miss for me.
I gave it a two as I could feel the intention to be a deeper more interesting and sexy story, but the dialogue and performance just was not there.
