The reading is oddly rough and rushed and the pronunciation of the names of French locations, artists and paintings is beyond atrocious, often beyond recognition. This is a problem in many Audible books, but especially bad in this one and one on realism in art that I started to listen to. Narrators should be more familiar with the people and places in the books they narrate.

This very brief book is a simple to understand and excellent review of artistic principles, not just applicable to black and white photography. The one objection to the narration is that chiaroscuro should be pronounced with a long “o” at the end, not like the vowel in the word “do”. Chiaroscuro is also a subject worthy of more description and explanation. Perhaps another short book by this author?

The book is fascinating while emotionally devastating. Cassandra Campbell's reading of it is superb. She breathes life into the characters to such a degree that I could not disentangle my emotions by saying that I am just listening to an author's imagined words. Listen to this amazing book, but be forewarned if you are emotionally vulnerable.
