Historia
Angela Davis has been a political activist at the cutting edge of the Black Liberation, feminist, queer, and prison-abolitionist movements for more than 50 years. Angela Davis: An Autobiography, first published and edited by Toni Morrison in 1974, is a powerful and commanding account of her early years in these struggles. Read by Angela Davis herself, this autobiography, told with warmth, brilliance, humor, and conviction, is a classic account of a life in struggle, with echoes in our own time.

We still have work to do.
Revisado: 04-28-25
This book should be read in history classes all throughout the US. It thoroughly depicts what was going on in this country during that time. I didn’t like the way it jumped around from time period to time period. For this reason it probably would’ve been better read with a hard copy so that other time periods could be reviewed to avoid confusion. The author’s voice is monotone, but I don’t know that this story would’ve been better told by someone else.

This book is written under specific conditions of which you should be aware. First, it’s not a “how to get rich” book for individuals looking to maximize their 401(k) or invest in the stock market. I have other material for these purposes. Secondly, it’s not a book for all people of all backgrounds.

Nothing but the truth!
Revisado: 04-22-25
This should be required reading for every Black person. The information given in this book would then allow for every one of us to make an informed decision- do we want to be rich or do we want to be wealthy, do we want progress or to maintain the status quo, and do we want to consumers or producers? No one is coming to save us except us. This book gives us the keys to unlock a better future for our kids and our community.

Historia
Until the 1970s, if you suffered a medical crisis, your chances of survival were minimal. A 9-1-1 call might bring police or even the local funeral home. But that all changed with Freedom House EMS in Pittsburgh, a group of Black men who became America’s first paramedics and set the gold standard for emergency medicine around the world, only to have their story and their legacy erased—until now.

Untold indeed!
Revisado: 01-15-25
I am one of few Black critical care transport nurses I know and had never heard about this esteemed group of pioneers who would work to develop the very career I fell in love with ever since I was in nursing school. What an honor to have read of their stories of perseverance and ingenuity and leadership and courage and… so many things. This story proves that I am indeed my ancestors wildest dreams. I pray I’m making them proud.

Just okay🤷🏾♀️
Revisado: 05-02-24
There’s nothing to see here, folks. I expected big things because I’m a huge fan; but as a fan, I’ve heard many of these stories multiple times before. And they really didn’t say anything profound. There were a few things shared in the book that they saved just for the readers, but overall it was just okay. They cursed a lot for no reason. I don’t mind it if it’s purposeful, but it’s like they did it because they could. It also mostly read like they each wrote a book and they tried to smoosh the two together. There was a lot of repeated information and the storyline was sometimes hard to follow because they jumped back and forth between different time periods. The reenacting of conversations was weird too. Usually when the authors are reading, those parts flow better because they were there… they lived it; but not with these two… at least not like on their videos. Overall, it was meh.

Historia
With his now-legendary store on 125th Street in Harlem, Dapper Dan pioneered high-end streetwear in the 1980s, remixing classic luxury-brand logos into his own innovative, glamorous designs. But before he reinvented haute couture, he was a hungry boy with holes in his shoes, a teen who daringly gambled drug dealers out of their money, and a young man in a prison cell who found nourishment in books. In this remarkable memoir, he tells his full story for the first time.

Good book but weird ending
Revisado: 01-29-24
The ending left was just too abrupt. That whole last section left me wondering what happens next. There’s no closure just random thoughts describing his day to day. Otherwise, it was an intriguing read.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Revisado: 12-28-23
This book is for every woman who’s ever been overlooked. It is written and narrated beautifully. I felt like I was in the room looking at and listening to the characters as it was being read. It I cried as I pictured myself in the studio audience while Elizabeth was giving her final farewell. I’m headed over to the TV now to binge watch the miniseries, but I can’t imagine it topping what I’ve just been blessed to hear in this audiobook. Thank you for this book.

Historia
In this must-listen book for anyone striving to succeed, pioneering psychologist Angela Duckworth shows parents, educators, students, and businesspeople - both seasoned and new - that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but a focused persistence called "grit". Why do some people succeed and others fail? Sharing new insights from her landmark research on grit, MacArthur "genius" Angela Duckworth explains why talent is hardly a guarantor of success.

Long, but good.
Revisado: 11-01-23
It took a whole lot of grit to finish this book. The amount of examples used to make her points was excessive; but when those points were made, it was almost worth the time it took to get to them. The overall content is a must read for anyone who needs encouragement to continue and who wants the utmost best for their children. This is a book for overcomers or for those who are trying to be.

Historia
Austin Channing Brown’s first encounter with race in America came at age seven, when she discovered that her parents had named her Austin to trick future employers into thinking she was a white man. Growing up in majority-white schools and churches, Channing Brown writes, “I had to learn what it means to love Blackness,” a journey that led to a lifetime spent navigating America’s racial divide. For students navigating a time of racial hostility, and for adults and educators who care for them, I’m Still Here is an empowering look at the experiences of young Black kids.

Revisado: 04-13-23
Excellent depiction of being Black in America. It felt like home and was sad and empowering all at the same time. I’m 41 years old, and this version truly resonated with me; so, don’t let the “Young Listeners…” part of the title deter you.

It leads to great discussions though.
Revisado: 01-07-23
I’m quite disappointed. We chose this book for our book club due to an overwhelming appreciation for Stormie’s Praying Wife and Woman of Prayer books, but this just seems like her patting herself on the back for how great of parent she is. It doesn’t take into account that children sometimes go their own way despite all your prayers and all that you pour into them, which is why we’re praying parents in the first place. We, in the book club sessions, have been able to work with what we got/the general ideas of the chapters to encourage each other and help each other work through the issues we’d hope the book would address.
I also really wish she had gotten someone else to read the book. In my head I see an old grandma looking down her nose at me as she reads. The prayers are powerful and the Weapons of Warfare saved this book. I have a hard copy already, which I’ve been struggling to read for years. If it weren’t for the portability and accessibility of having the audio version, I would’ve returned this.

Historia
Being “shook” is more than a rap lyric for Charlamagne; it’s his mission to overcome. While it may seem like he is ahead of the game and should have nothing to worry about, he is still plagued by anxieties - fear of being weak; fear of being a bad dad; fear of being a worse husband; and, ultimately, fear of failure. Shook One chronicles his journey to beat back those fears and empowers you to no longer be held back from your potential.

More than just a biography!
Revisado: 11-10-22
This is the best autobiography I’ve read so far. It is the epitome of ”I’m going to tell you what I’ve gone through so that you don’t have to go through it yourself” and I truly appreciate that. The way his experience is married with the commentary provided by the psychiatrist helps to clarify and solidify what he is conveying. It’s like learning through caae studies as opposed to writing notes while listening to a bland lecture. Great job, Charlemagne!
