... the 'voice' was somehow disappointing ... I felt a lot of the time that the POV was male, particularly the dynamic of the sex encounters and the hyperwokeness of the men ... these men were not likely on type for someone wondering where this beautiful world is hiding. Almost in plain sight it seems, esp as both men hung in there through difficult stretches.

Wrong audience, wrong message

Good book on organizing the facts.
Technocratic, passionless top down advice to governments who are in the thrall of Big Heat with little impetus for change. The book ignores ordinary people, both in passion and in action. "Speak to your representative" is no 'cri de coeur' because he doesn't have one ... or none that shows in this book. I'd rather listen to Greta. Farmer John (75)

An Important Masterwork

Thomas King is, above all, a most engaging storyteller. The kind of person you might hope would still be at your side at the campfire when all others have given themselves over to sleep. The kind to lead you into another world under the stars.

Of course, he is a passionate Indian (his inclusive choice among many possibilities of self-designation which could include Cherokee, aboriginal, first nations, first people etc). His unremitting humour both enhances and belies the existential seriousness of the Indian quest for a post-colonial future. He tells every sad and sorry tale with both precision and heart.

This book inspires me to be an enthusiastic part of the discussion, and supporter, of 'what Indians want', while doing everything in my power to get the hell out of the way while they bring it about on their terms.

It's important, period. A continent bereft of Indians and their many cultures, is a diminished continent. This loss is no less than that which may soon be wrought by the ongoing decline and destruction of the continent's native animals, plants, landscapes, water, soils and air.

Governments and their laws have proven inadequate to the task. This book demands a change of heart in the colonizers themselves. It's personal. Am I up to it?

Read it and Weep ... and then Do Something!

A powerful book about what we've fully known since the '70s (that how we live is dooming our descendants and this living world) and how it is that we've done nothing about it. It will be a more bitter pill for our inaction, but there's still a small window to effect a cure. But you and I, fellow readers, must take on the responsibility to do big things, and do them now!

Soar to Surpassinh Heights

Far more illuminating than the more famous Little Prince, this book provokes timely and relevant thought in every line and page. With just a little quiet contemplation of this time-traveler's experiences in the vast deserts of Africa and in the skies, your life may be turned to new paths as yet undiscovered.

This short book is long on shock. Performed as a play in Scenes rather than Chapters, it reaches your emotional center more than a straight-up novel ever could. If you thought the levers controlling planet Earth in the cosmos were still kind of under your control, or could be if you took a little more interest, disabuse yourself of this thought now. You think that passionate right-minded people can set things right with the environment and the climate? Press Reset now. You thought that certain influential people were on your side? Better check the team jerseys ... they weren't! Where to go from here? Work small groups. Think locally. Trust people you know. At least then you'll have company to watch the end-of-days fireworks. See you there!

A Singular Achievement!

Ed Wilson has tied four great arenas of study into a comprehensive whole ... physics, molecular biology, sociology and the humanities are glimpsed tracking towards a common science ... the science of life ... we're not there yet, and we must still pass existential bottlenecks, but parts of the way forward are now more illuminated ... a tour de force of rigorous scientific aspiration and realization!

Leopold was Right!

Almost every issue crucial to current discussions of loss of biodiversity and species extinction was identified by Aldo Leopold 3/4 centuries ago! We have not substantially changed our ways since this profound text was written. The teachings concerning essential ethics and restraint were plainly set out. We have failed the course, and are soon to be expelled from the university of the natural world unless we greatly improve our grades.
