Historia
Barbara Butcher was early in her recovery from alcoholism when she found an unexpected lifeline: a job at the Medical Examiner’s Office in New York City. The second woman ever hired for the role of Death Investigator in Manhattan, she was the first to last more than three months. The work was gritty, demanding, morbid, and sometimes dangerous—and she loved it. In What the Dead Know, she writes with the kind of New York attitude and bravado you might expect from decades in the field, investigating more than 5,500 death scenes, 680 of which were homicides.

Telling her own story
Revisado: 10-11-24
The author being the reader made the story for me. I have found the job she did interesting for some time. Several authors have also dealt with the aftermath for them. Many stories dealt with the victims and their families - the stories of those who work for and with them have been powerful to read. They did their job, and deserve our admiration and gratitude

Long-time favorite
Revisado: 06-29-23
I have read this many times since it first came out. Now I listen - whenever the urge strikes. Each time I enjoy it again, I find myself wishing for other stories. How the events and people touched by John Smith went on - how they were affected, how they ended.
King’s characters have always drawn me - many authors write stories of the supernatural, ghosts, old horrors, new ones. But following his characters through it all…makes them the best stories.
I have them alive in my mind, and I follow.
Still a great favorite

Breathless and painstakingly researched, this is a stunning debut mystery in which Sherlock Holmes unmasks Jack the Ripper. Lyndsay Faye perfectly captures all the color and syntax of Conan Doyle’s distinctive nineteenth-century London.

An emotional Story of Sherlock
Revisado: 09-25-20
I have been wary of Sherlock from other writers. I’ve enjoyed the original stories all my life, never tire of them. I tried this one, and am not disappointed. A great story, as good a theory about Jack the Ripper as any others I’ve read. Also, an unusual quality of a Sherlock story - my emotions were wrung.
Enjoyed it completely

Historia
This wasn’t the plan. Judge Herman Calvert, 88, never thought he’d outlive his beloved wife, Marie. Yet now he finds himself alone, a grieving widower, desperate for escape from the home they built together, where every turn brings a painful reminder of his late wife. So the judge retreats to his lake cabin in rural Wisconsin, a place where an old man can find peace and solitude. A place where nature can take its course. But something new has moved in.

Short and enjoyable
Revisado: 09-23-20
A bit of fantasy, not overdone, a character I could visualize and “get” - and a story of aging, loss and acceptance.
The narrator did an excellent job - matter of fact delivery, emphasis and pauses just right for the story.
I very much enjoyed it.

Great fun!
Revisado: 09-17-20
I enjoyed this completely. Since I saw ‘Stephen Fry in America’ I have looked for more he has done. The chapter he read from the first Harry Potter book led me to others on Audible, and when I saw this offering, I started it immediately. Gentle, amusing, friendly - I enjoyed it all the way through.
