Interesting book, but lacks scientific foundation

Based on Dr. Peter Attia's suggestion (in his book, "Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity") to wear a continuous glucose monitor to see what foods you react to the most, I decided to also dive into "Glucose Revolution." The book was interesting, and the author's accent was fun to listen to. However, when I started digging into the science behind what she presents, I found it sorely lacking. There are a number of articles and videos by registered dieticians who point out all of the flaws in the claims that the author included in the book. Maybe I've been spoiled by Dr. Michael Greger, author of "How Not to Die" and "How Not to Diet," who always tells you what studies the information he's sharing is from (and what level of quality they are), but I now require better science than that provided by the author of this book. I was ultimately disappointed in this book.

This makes the movie even better!

This book has a wonderful trove of anecdotes about the movie. Having listened to it, I am eagerly anticipating the next viewing of the movie, even though I have already seen it a score of times. Listening to the book will make the movie even more special! Before I listened to the book, I would not have thought that possible. Highly recommended!

It is unusual to find an audio book that is read by the author in which the narration is this high-quality.

The content was engaging, well-organized, and fun to listen to. I have listened to other audio books about eating and food, and this was on par with the best of them.

Disclaimer: I may be slightly biased by the fact that she is married to one of my favorite technical innovators, Kevin Rose. LOL

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I found the ending predictable, but even if it hadn't been predictable it would still have been a letdown. There were also far too many loose ends... and not the kind that lead to a follow-on book, but more like things left hanging that the author didn't realize were hanging.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The performance was interesting in that it integrated things like an important song AS a song with music. However, it also haphazardly included other sound effects like slamming doors and thunderstorms. Sometimes they'd include the sounds and sometimes not, without rhyme or reason. Also, the audio mixing made it hard to hear some of the dialogue over some of the thunderstorm soundtrack.

Was Beautiful Creatures worth the listening time?

About a third of the way through, I decided I would sit through the remainder to see how things went so I wouldn't have that "I wonder what happened?" question in the back of my mind. That's the ONLY reason I listened to the rest, though.

Any additional comments?

The romance aspect of this book, which is what I was mainly drawn to, was very poorly done. It was much too one-sided as far as having insight into the inner thoughts of the two protagonists.

I also found the whole "the adults don't know what they're doing" aspect annoying. J. K. Rowling pulled that off well with her Hogwarts books, but this was played up too much in this book.

Would you try another book from Peter Clines and/or Ray Porter?

I will definitely avoid Ray Porter as a narrator, though I can't fault him for the whole thing. The sound engineer had some blame, too. You quickly discover that they recorded one instance of "said Nate," and then used it throughout the audiobook. Only, there's a slight pause between the words that makes it not flow, and it gets REALLY annoying.

And Peter Clines, the author, has GOT to get a better editor. One who will tell him that one does not "take a hit off of his beer," and that even if he did, we, the readers, really don't want to hear about EVERY FREAKING SIP that the character takes! The minutiae that the author chose to include in the narrative really boggled my mind. I kept thinking that it was some kind of clue or something, and that it would explain itself in the end. But, no. It was just the author not knowing what to put in and what to take out. Which is typically the editor's job. So, narrator, sound engineer, author, and editor all share the blame on the fact that I only listened to the end to find out how it ended, not because I was enjoying myself.

Would you be willing to try another one of Ray Porter’s performances?

Pretty unlikely.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from 14?

As an editor, I'd have taken a harder look at whether all of the facts lined up. Considering this was a pseudo-mystery novel (not my typical genre to read), I'd have expected there to be no internally inconsistent facts. They call a major piece of the puzzle (no spoilers from me!) by one name, then determine that it couldn't be the name, but then revert to calling it by that name for the rest of the book. Make up your mind, Peter Clines!

Where does The Perks of Being a Wallflower rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Falls behind The Time Traveler's Wife, but only just. Very high on my list.

Who was your favorite character and why?

No one character stands out.. they all bring something to the story.

What does Noah Galvin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

There is NOBODY else who could have done this audiobook. Noah sounded exactly like a high school freshman. He captured the angst, the frustration, the joy, and everything else that the protagonist, Charlie, expressed.
