Good and Enjoyable but..
Revisado: 07-17-24
The story and ideas are pretty good and creative. It does a good job explaining where the tech field, politicians, and geo politics stand in this country try and the world. However, it didn’t hit as hard as the previous books. Maybe because the book wasn’t linked to the James’ past as the other books were. Also, there is something dull about the Reece being buddy buddy with the CIA and US Gov. I enjoyed Alice being in his side but Reece is easier to root for when he is a lone wolf. I wish there was more foreshadowing into another book. Was this the last we will see of James Reece?

Historia
July 1863. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia is invading the North. General Robert E. Lee has made this daring and massive move with seventy thousand men in a determined effort to draw out the Union Army of the Potomac and mortally wound it. His right hand is General James Longstreet, a brooding man who is loyal to Lee but stubbornly argues against his plan. Opposing them is an unknown factor: General George Meade, who has taken command of the Army only two days before what will be perhaps the crucial battle of the Civil War.

Historia
It is the summer of 1760 and the British navy reigns supreme on the oceans of the world; only in the Mediterranean is its mastery still seriously challenged. Admiral Saunders is sent with a squadron of ships-of-the-line to remind those nations that are still neutral of the consequences of siding with the French.

Not Durbin’s best work
Revisado: 05-25-24
The story was ok, not the best. Many of the chapters didn’t seem to have relevance in the overall story.
Carlisle and Holbrooke have essentially become the same character with little writing distinguishing the two characters. They think the same, act the same, question decisions the same. I think the series would be better if the two were distinguishingly different characters. Holbrooke has become more of a favorite character as Carlisle seems to be lost to the author.
The narrator seems to make the book worse with his monotone story telling, especially in combat. Numerous times I found myself day dreaming during battles as the narrator fails to capture the listeners attention.
Take this review with a grain of salt as I’ve listened to all 21 of the Jack Aubrey books.

Did not enjoy the first person narration, but got used to it
Revisado: 04-22-24
The first couple chapters was very hard to get used to the first person narration and almost made me regret buying the book. It gets better along the line and the story picks up. Worth the buy.

Historia
Amphibious warfare was in its infancy in the mid-18th century–it was the poor relation of the great fleet actions that the navy so loved.... That all changed in 1758 when the British government demanded a campaign of raids on the French Channel ports. Command arrangements were hastily devised and a whole new class of vessels was produced at breakneck speed: flatboats, the ancestors of the landing craft that put the allied forces ashore on D-Day.

Narration was the weak link
Revisado: 07-19-23
Overall the story was excellent and entertaining. The frustration with this book comes from the narrator. The slow tempo and monotone delivery of the story, especially during battle scenes was lackluster and took away from the story. Many times during a battle scenes I would have to rewind because I found myself daydreaming or falling asleep. Unlike past books or Jack Aubrey books where you can hear the excitement in the narration, this book was dull and dry. Every sentence was drawn out and delivered as if it was the very last sentence of a book.

Historia
When Admiral William Halsey selected Destroyer Squadron 21 to lead his victorious ships into Tokyo Bay to accept the Japanese surrender, it was the most battle-hardened US naval squadron of the war. But it was not the squadron of ships that had accumulated such an inspiring résumé; it was the people serving aboard them. Through diaries, personal interviews with survivors, and letters written to and by the crews during the war, preeminent historian of the Pacific theater John Wukovits brings to life the human story of the squadron and its men.

Great book,
I’ve listened to a lot of the naval history books about Guadalcanal and southern Solomon Islands. This is simply one of the best.
