Historia
In 2020, heartsick from constant assaults on Black life, Tracy K. Smith found herself soul-searching and digging into the historical archive for help navigating the “din of human division and strife.” With lyricism and urgency, Smith draws on several avenues of thinking—personal, documentary, and spiritual—to understand who we are as a nation and what we might hope to mean to one another.

A fresh and very personal series of ruminations on racism and its effects on life and relationships and more. Poetically written and presented.

Historia
This transcendent story follows four college friends who move to New York City, buoyed by ambition: Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; and, at the center, Jude, a withdrawn, brilliant attorney haunted by an unspeakable past. Through decades of shared and separate lives, Jude’s suffering - and its impact on those who love him - raises questions about the limits of human endurance, the possibility for redemption, and the meaning of friendship.

Historia
The author found golden earrings and a million memories when she was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Somalia. Listen to the stars dancing over Somalia and hear tales of warriors and camel herders, songs at the wells and melodies in every footstep. Moira, a young Peace Corps Volunteer, stretched her senses to soak in every story, every song that was around her. Her missteps tossed a beautiful young woman into a whipping circle, and denied her students the futures they had worked so hard to obtain.

VERY REAL
Revisado: 01-20-20
A novel that grew out of MaryAnn Shank's Peace Corps experiences in Somalia in the late 1960s. With precise details and a strong feminist point of view, she very realistically captures the personalities, the Western culture, and the Somali culture that she encountered during her two years in the small, southern Somali town of Baidoa. Since I was there at the same time, I can certainly vouch for the accuracy of much of what she relates. Her strong Lesbian perspectives and how those shaped her thinking and experiences add a whole new and often tragic aspect to the novel.

Historia
On February 4, 1974, Patty Hearst, a sophomore in college and heiress to the Hearst family fortune, was kidnapped by a ragtag group of self-styled revolutionaries calling itself the Symbionese Liberation Army. The already sensational story took the first of many incredible twists on April 3, when the group released a tape of Patty saying she had joined the SLA and had adopted the nom de guerre “Tania.”

Any additional comments?
Excellent recounting of the events of 1974-on, combined with explanations of the SLA organization, its development, and its personalities. It reads like a grand adventure/mystery thriller. While Toobin has clearly stated notions of culpability, as well as of the causes for the motivations of the characters, he is never heavy-handed in pushing a personal point of view. A tremendous picture of the times.
