Historia
Ahren and his companions journey on to Evergreen, finding new courage after the traumas of the Green Sea. Setting off, then, to traverse the continent in search of the missing Paladin Yollock, it isn't long before they find themselves sucked into a maelstrom of adventures involving a woman who has been robbed, a desperate Cape Verstaad grandee, not to mention a cutthroat city which proves itself a veritable nest of ne'er-do-wells. Controlled by the brilliant assassin Reik Silvermantle, this hub of lawlessness and immorality presents Ahren and his friends with one of their greatest challenges.

Great epic adventure.. regardless of editing
Revisado: 04-10-25
Ive stayed with the series, with the 13th and his friends as they battle once more. Beware of the unexpected all the way through. thus is perhaps the best book yet.
if there is a blocked sewer in Jorath, and that overflow was damned in a gully, then GolConnar would be at the bottom scraping. This is the city of cutthroats. it is perhaps only overshadowed by 19th century Lagos or Paris from a Victor Hugo nightmare. I have seldom read such a vivid description of the scum and depravity as Weitze sketches here. You can almost smell the stench of the meat market, the inn of 50 sins...and all the dasterdly works therein. read the horror of the cess pit of Jorath with caution.
the change in narrator is an improvement (although temporary) on the previous. at least different voices remain consistent between the ever growing supporters of the 13th.
once again like the preceeding installments the editing leaves a masterpiece tarnished.

Historia
After the Renegade mission by the crew of the starship Flying Dutchman, the UN Expeditionary Force thought Earth was safe for hundreds of years, at least. After there was trouble on the home front and the president had to authorize a nuclear strike on an American city, UNEF decided they did need the Merry Band of Pirates again. So, the Flying Dutchman is sent out on a simple recon mission. But for the pirates, nothing is ever simple, and their mission will become Armageddon.

Historia
The battle-scarred star carrier Flying Dutchman is finally on her way back to Earth, after an exceptionally successful series of missions that have once again saved the world. The ship needs a serious refit, and her exhausted crew just wants a break from constant clandestine warfare against a vicious and superior enemy. Wishes come true, right? Not for the Merry Band of Pirates.

Revisado: 12-13-21
where other species plot and scheme, monkeys kick a$$$.
I've read tons of reviews on the series following Columbus day and parts of this series, most are kinda, meh shmortof good but the reviews take themselves way too seriously. they forget that the primary purpose of this series is to be entertaining, suspend reality and provide enough handwavium to get the Scifi box ticked (albeit, Barney style). Renegades and this installment of the Merryband of Pirates delivers on this, BIG TIME. and some.
Alanson (whose ideas and convoltedly brilliant escapes are again hilarious, the characters developing, and the plot moves forward. that is enough for me.
RCB was top notch again, providing a full cast of voices.
if you have read a less than stellar review before this one, consider yourself a sheeple, and if you are hesitating, shame on you. Trues believers have no doubts. get unbrainwashed and let Jo Bishop with his New England accent, the ever proper Nagatha, Smyth, Simms, and the always ADHD Skippy take you through wormholes, bend space, hijack Pixes (hell yeah!), and ... well the end will surprise you.
just let the Awesomeness, ugh duh, now where was I, anyhow. yes just let the awesomeness.

2nd...time around, hold my beer, belay that ...
Revisado: 11-22-21
previously I reviewed this installment as a half step towards the total plot. now the 2nd time listening to mavericks I find that was too hard. its actually a standalone in the ongoing story. what we have is a really great development in an slow moving plot, of the whole exforce series. either you like it, or we'll Skippy just won't care. just love the hidden gem of a tribute to Galaxy Edge "the galaxy is a dumpster fire " from Jason Anspach.
behind all the slapstick and redneckery Alanson a had actually delivered some insights that most space opera gloss over, AI Human relationships, smarter aliens, ftl, space battle, intra alien relationships and galactic culture. plus he gas managed to grow the 2 story lines: of perkins and paradise, and that of the merry band.

Historia
United Nations Special Operations Command sent an elite expeditionary force of soldiers and pilots out on a simple recon mission, and somehow along the way they sparked an alien civil war. Now the not-at-all-merry band of pirates is in desperate trouble, again. Their stolen alien starship is falling apart, thousands of light years from home. The ancient alien AI they nicknamed Skippy is apparently dead, and even if they can by some miracle revive him, he might never be the same.

2nd Time round, the series gets better
Revisado: 11-11-21
I kinda rushed through the series (1- 6) and really enjoyed the development and plot, but hoped for greater insight to Skippy and the whole elder/collective plot line. this time round with less rush I'm appreciating the crises a minute and Merry band of pirates black ops thing.
what I love here is that Alanson does not take the space opera or scigi too seriously and loves his characters whom he grows through successive crises as part of the ongoing adventures.
for first time listeners to this book or the series just relax, "chill dude" and "trust the awesomeness" of a chrome plated beer can. please ignore any of the tedium of negative comments these from buzz kill biological trashbags that are hurt coz their brand of redneck has been discarded for woodsy New England's

Historia
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

2nd time round and a loved it more
Revisado: 10-04-21
if you are looking for scifi/pseudo quantum ftl mishmash and handwavium this book is, erm very "meh". but if you don't take military space opera too seriously this intro to the series is a must have.
alanson and bray are a winning combo
oh yes, about halfway thru you will meet a Supreme Asxxxxxhxle, talk about deus ex machine or something literary like that. Skippy, though may be way over the top is a splendid foil for commentary on modern society, social norms and well, beauracratic and academic officialdom (isn't that what sci-fi is for? he also helps to carry the merry band of pirates to save the day along with a barrel of gaffaws and sniggers.
the audible version is much better for rc bray narration than the hardcover read, just saying

Boring, yes. Dangerous? No, the trip is not supposed to be dangerous, never has been. Revisado: 09-11-21
young readers will enjoy this intro. I really like this first book into the Aces series. alanson sets his characters well and grows the story. one gets the impression that he and Andrew's enjoyed making this book as much as I reading/listening. Andrew's accents get a little jumbled but it does not detract from general offering.

Historia
Terrorism, duty, and personal safety collide when Jake Pendleton, an investigator for the NTSB, is called to investigate an aircraft accident in Savannah, Georgia during the St. Patrick's Day celebration. The accident, which at first appears to be quite run-of-the-mill, turns out to be anything but. Since Jake is not willing to pretend there are no suspicious circumstances and more than the usual share of rather unlikely "coincidences," he sets off a veritable avalanche of secrets, violence and treachery.

long intro worth the wait for the showdown
Revisado: 08-31-21
i was drawn to this series by the intro to book 3 and decided to start book 1.
while this is certainty not the highest body count in a spy thriller it certainty does not lack in gory detail. it's a plausible premise that is comparable as any from a clancy novel.
I guess the longwinded build-up in Savanah is required for the drama in Ireland, but there is a bit too much luck for both antagonist and protagonist involved. it almost makes one sceptical and think that barret started planning the multi novel series from st patrics day in Savanah.
I'll follow the rest of the series 1 more book.
as always, Scott Brick is gold and his measured dictation and accents versatility carry a mediocre novel to way higher levels than would be the case if I was reading the hard-copy

powerful pinnacle that has Enders Game as intro
Revisado: 08-10-21
Speaker, the speaker has been a favorite book in my hard copy collection since it was first published. Although well acclaimed at the time, with awards from fans and critics alike. I never grasped the magnitude and completeness of the four levels of forgiveness, and how much of our interaction today hinge on Ramen or Verelsa worldviews.
I'm astounded at my naivity all those years ago and how so much of my opinion of the book (it was great book then exploring Xenology boundaries out there) and being moved by othernesses was based on internal narrative was intellectual and uncommitted Now, more pertinent is the exploring of Xenology boundaries in here. Then I had not really been alive, but of like the piggies caught in the 1st life. reading it then, now after the benefits of life knocking a couple of sharp edges off, I can appreciate this for this exploration if our human conditions. This narration, this cast and this this team has brought new direction and meaning, as it were a new voice, like the 2nd life under the leaves and shades to an old favorite.
I think this will live with me for a awhile and then be revisited like an old friend or like good wine to savour the character, body and to mull over concepts of this very strange world we are living in today. Perhaps then, it will really live in the full sun, shoot out roots, grow trunk and branches and be seen as the pinnacle of science fiction and introspective thought as it should have in the 3rd life.
