Historia
Forty thousand years in the past, the last family of Neanderthals roams the earth. After a crushingly hard winter, their numbers are low, but Girl, the oldest daughter, is just coming of age and her family is determined to travel to the annual meeting place and find her a mate. But the unforgiving landscape takes its toll, and Girl is left alone to care for Runt, a foundling of unknown origin. In the modern day, archaeologist Rosamund Gale works well into her pregnancy, racing to excavate newly found Neanderthal artifacts before her baby comes.

Inaccurate and No Real Plot
Revisado: 02-22-24
Rose's half of the story was bland and completely uninteresting, with bad dialog thrown in. She spends it worrying about her career and how Neanderthals are thought of, but the ideas she fights against have been out of favour for decades. Girl's story was inconclusive and not at all satisfying. She goes through an ordeal and then the book just sort of ends.
Rose insists on clearing up old ideas about Neanderthals, yet the author does nothing of the sort. They are depicted as overly primitive and can barely talk, like some sort of much earlier hominid or even australopithecus. Spoiler, Girl does something brutish and heartless at the end, making Neanderthals sound like they didn't even have compassion.
I was so done by the end.

Historia
When spring comes, the people leave their winter cave, foraging for honey and shoots, bulbs and grubs, the hot richness of a deer's brain. They awaken the fire to heat their naked bodies, lay down their thorn bushes and share pictures in their minds. But strange things are happening - inexplicable scents, sounds and violence - and, suddenly, unimaginable creatures are half-glimpsed in the forest: an upright new people of bone-faces and deerskins. What the early people don't know is that their season is already over....

None of the stories really spoke to me and some I just skipped altogether. The narration ranges from okay to horrible in places. Some of the authors don't seem to be particularly knowledgeable about history.

Halfway through and all of the characters are one dimensional. I'm still waiting for a major plot point. The premise is great, but the execution put me to sleep.

Historia
Dead things have been found in the fields of Enfaire, a God-fearing town north of Reams. Not just dead things, but twisted forms…unholy shapes. And there are rumors of a blasphemous union and of fell creatures that haunt the night. Yet even as plague and witch pyres blacken the sky, the town remains untouched by the malady that has already claimed thousands and will claim thousands more. It is here, in Enfaire, that an old Franciscan friar and his ward take shelter from a storm. It is here, in a little town on the edge of civilization, that they will have their faith truly tested.

Ending was a letdown
Revisado: 05-16-23
It's well written and I think the author has a genuine passion for metal, but nothing was really explained in the end. Why is this happening? Why did this solve the problem? Not to mention the extraneous characters that didn't really serve a purpose in the story.

Historia
From Rose Tremain comes the Booker Prize short-listed novel that “restored the historical novel to its rightful place of honor” ( New York Times). Robert Merivel, son of a glove maker and an aspiring physician, finds his fortunes transformed when he is given a position at the court of King Charles II. Merivel slips easily into a life of luxury and idleness, enthusiastically enjoying the women and wine of the vibrant Restoration age. But when he’s called on to serve the king in an unusual role, he transgresses the one law he is forbidden to break and is brutally cast out from his newfound paradise.

Brilliantly written and narrated. The characters are all interesting, especially King Charles II. The protagonist's character arc and unique problems keep the story interesting. The negative reviewers missed the point of the book.
