Historia
Our understanding of the American West has moved far beyond pop culture in recent years. The legendary people and events we associate with the Wild West - the last stand at the Alamo, the Battle of Little Bighorn, the exploits of Calamity Jane, the hardships of the Oregon Trail - are even more fascinating once the historical realities have been separated from the myths.

Some histories are difficult to listen to and very dry. This history is fascinating, and gave me a new understanding of the West.

Historia
The French Revolution casts a long shadow, one that reaches into our own time and influences our debates on freedom, equality, and authority. Yet it remains an elusive, perplexing historical event. Its significance morphs according to the sympathies of the viewer, who may see it as a series of gory tableaux, a regrettable slide into uncontrolled anarchy - or a radical reshaping of the political landscape. In this riveting new book, Ian Davidson provides a fresh look at this vital moment in European history. He reveals how it was an immensely complicated and multifaceted revolution....

Worthwhile. Very.
Revisado: 01-05-25
A good summary of what comprised the confusing, complicated revolution. We all know that the Royal family was guillotined, the poor rose up to fight at the barricades in Paris, and eventually some of the violent leaders were themselves put to death. This book highlights the sad, tragic and horrendous story underpinning the key events.

Not for me. Very disturbing and violent. The two sisters do such dumb things that I didn't care what happened to them. I stopped listening a few times then went back to it and finally deleted it halfway through.

too many cooks in the kitchen
Revisado: 09-21-16
What would have made The Chopin Manuscript better?
one author
What could the authors have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
it would have been better had most of the authors refused the opportunity to contribute a chapter.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Alfred Molina did a great job.
Any additional comments?
Due to the plethora of authors, there was deep character development of characters that one author invented and then the next author minimized. Many authors wanted to explain topics about which they had done research. Had he/she written a book on his/her own, the topic might have been interesting, but many of the authors did this about topics that later became unimportant, making some sections with extensive detail downright boring. This was an interesting exercise for the authors, but I wouldn't bother to buy another book using this gimmick.

Historia
“In wartime,” Winston Churchill wrote, “truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies.” For Britain’s counterintelligence operations, this meant finding the unlikeliest agent imaginable - a history professor named Alfred Vicary, handpicked by Churchill himself to expose a highly dangerous, but unknown, traitor. The Nazis, however, have also chosen an unlikely agent.

If you could sum up The Unlikely Spy in three words, what would they be?
Interesting, Intriguing, fascinating history.
Any additional comments?
I bought this book several years ago and listened to it, and then bought it again by mistake. But even after I realized that I had listened to it before, I still listened to the entire book again because it was so well written and so well narrated.

Not my cup of tea either
Revisado: 02-23-16
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
reader's voice was too young and trendy and I found it annoying. The beginning of the story was sort of silly. I couldn't listen to more than 2 chapters before I deleted it.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Too young. too trendy. too silly.

Historia
In 1665, a young man from Martha's Vineyard became the first Native American to graduate from Harvard College. Upon this slender factual scaffold, Brooks has created a luminous tale of love and faith, magic and adventure. The narrator of Caleb's Crossing is Bethia Mayfield, growing up in the tiny settlement of Great Harbor amid a small band of pioneers and Puritans. Restless and curious, she yearns after an education that is closed to her by her sex....

Slow story pace, annoying reader
Revisado: 12-02-14
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Probably better to read this book, since reader's style was annoying, and if you read the book you can skim parts of the book. Several friends agreed that the reader's effort to sound accurate and formal for the era was grating and almost made them stop listening. The actress who read the book is a terrific actress, but the reading style for this book was painful to listen to.

In 1939, the Germans invaded the town of Lodz, Poland, and moved the Jewish population into a small part of the city called a ghetto. As the war progressed, 270,000 people were forced to settle in the ghetto under impossible conditions. At the end of the war, there were about 800 survivors. Of those who survived, only twelve were children. This is the story of one of the twelve.

Reader's voice annoying
Revisado: 07-14-14
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The reader. I found her voice grating, in attempting to talk like a little girl, with inflections of "California Girl."
What did you like best about this story?
So far I have stopped and then gone back to it twice, unable to continue due to the reader's "little girl" voice. I think I would like the story if I just read the book.
What didn’t you like about Tavia Gilbert’s performance?
Her little girl voice was annoying, and she talks with inflections in odd places, like a California Girl accent.
Was Yellow Star worth the listening time?
not with this reader.
