a promising effort turns into a comic book

It must simply be too difficult to sustain the creative effort across so many pages. By the end of book 2 the cliches have taken over. A fantasy novel has morphed into a super hero extravaganza with a hefty doze of "KAPOW" and "BLAM" driving the story forward. Too bad, book 1 and the beginning of book 2 showed much promise.

This one's a keeper. Despite Silverberg's reputation as a great SF author, this book isn't a genre work. It's has a lyrical feel, maybe like a memoir with telepathy as a kind of stand-in for the creative process. The performance was wonderful with lots of colour, but never overbearing. Best book I read or listened to all year.

What other book might you compare What Is America to and why?

Diamond's "Guns, Germs, and Steel" is the obvious comparison. However the aims and the focus of the two books are quite different.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes. The impact comes from looking at the "big picture" and then contrasting it to the standard American mythology. Go watch Milton Friedman's "What is America?" lecture on Youtube after finishing Wright's book to gain some insight into the importance of the titular question. True American history is subversive! America, as presently constituted, needs selective amnesia in order to function. Its a rather heavy feeling once that realization sinks in.
