Fun Fantasy
Revisado: 12-26-24
Great narration, excellent character depth, well though out story line, lots of intrigue and dark fantasy concepts, magic, and adventure. very engaging. loved the interweved cultures and myths. No smut, just great characters, fantasy, complex relationship building, and a unique world in fantasy. loved it. starting the soul of the sword ASAP.

Historia
Effy Sayre has always believed in fairy tales. Haunted by visions of the Fairy King since childhood, she’s had no choice. Her tattered copy of Angharad—Emrys Myrddin’s epic about a mortal girl who falls in love with the Fairy King, then destroys him—is the only thing keeping her afloat. So when Myrddin’s family announces a contest to redesign the late author’s estate, Effy feels certain it’s her destiny. But musty, decrepit Hiraeth Manor is an impossible task, and its residents are far from welcoming.

lyrical and unique
Revisado: 06-20-24
surprisingly, it was the negative reviews that made me take the plunge. Many of us want to read a unique world without bs tropes and excellent lyrical writing, along with damaged characters and deeper meanings layered into main story line. loved it. just go for it!

YA tropes galore
Revisado: 06-13-24
couldn't do it. made it halfway and then skimmed as I could to give myself some closure. had so much potential and interesting world and concepts, could not stand the narrator, couldn't stand the MCs inner dialogue, or forced thought processes
I loved the hunger games... when I was 15. too much description of rediculous outfits that only look more rediculous as the author puts more description into it., too much info dumping on media and what everyone is seeing via cameras etc. and reactions of general populas blah blah. it just was super tacky super fast.

Historia
Opal is a lot of things—orphan, high school dropout, full-time cynic and part-time cashier—but above all, she's a determined to find a better life for her younger brother Jasper. One that gets them out of Eden, Kentucky, a town remarkable for only two things: bad luck and E. Starling, the reclusive nineteenth century author of The Underland, who disappeared over a hundred years ago. All she left behind were dark rumors—and her home. Everyone agrees that it’s best to ignore the uncanny mansion and its misanthropic heir, Arthur. Almost everyone, anyway.

So Good
Revisado: 05-24-24
Excellent and unique. loved the characters. This isnt shiny and sparkly. its gritty, eerie, sarcastic and emotional. The story, like the starling house, is full of depth, history and magic. I love darker fantasy and flawed people. no plot holes, no tacky romance, no over used fantasy tropes. Just a really emotional, raw, and well written story with everything wrapped up in the end. you can't stop listening. definately worth a credit. great narration. I will read more by this author!

very emotional
Revisado: 03-14-24
I preferred girl in pieces, the story itself kept me more rapt and hit me personally in the gut. This one took me a little longer to listen to, not for lack of experience of loss and grief. However, I'm bawling my eyes out for the last 2 hours of the book so... anyone who has experienced deep loss will most definately resonate with everything tiger feels, and we all should have our eyes open to the state systems, foster care, and all the youth/children who fall into the cracks. Ms. Glasgow has fast become one of my favorite authors 2 books in.

Historia
According to Confucius, “an educated woman is a worthless woman,” but Tan Yunxian—born into an elite family, yet haunted by death, separations, and loneliness—is being raised by her grandparents to be of use. Her grandmother is one of only a handful of female doctors in China, and she teaches Yunxian the pillars of Chinese medicine, the Four Examinations—looking, listening, touching, and asking—something a man can never do with a female patient.

Wonderful Women's Literature
Revisado: 02-27-24
Beautiful and heartfelt...sometimes hearbreaking and maddening. A sumptuous look into Confucian China and the rules woman were bound to. These extreme patriarchal rules and expectations that Chinese women were subject to is explained and described in a way that transports we as readers fully and personally. The amazing resilience, strength, and relationship women create at all ages and times, is explored deeply through the narrative of their lives and the perspective of Lady Tan. The magic of female medicine and friendship is always at the forefront of this novel. Both potent and precious in a time where men ruled all and medicine and care for women was woefully lacking in all ways. Women healers and doctors, though strongly looked down upon and even forbidden, paved a way through the bizarre care of the female health miss-understanding and lack of communication, touch, or care by male doctors and male family in general. The women doctors and midwives, as well as all the women who made it their life's work to care for other women in this severe time of classism, isolation, and rigid male dominion, makes this novel a strong gem. The historical biographical aspect of it is special and written with such voice and care. Seeing a Confucian Chinese woman and her circle of other women grow through time was done excellently by Ms See. Timeless tale of female bonds, hardships, and resilience.

Overall great duology. Exciting and unique world, likeable characters, good writing. and Saskia narrating.. Can't go wrong. Ness inner monologues do get repetitive, like shut up already Ness you have repeated the same thing in your head every 5 mins lol. but still great book and amazing narration. worth the read.

Revisado: 02-07-24
I'm glad I found this gem. it's a quick easy read. lots of fun and good action, great descriptives without overdoing. yes lots of inner monologues. I love it though. I love Ness and her inner shit. I also liked that this focused on its own individual and unique story and not all the tropes I have been trying to escape lately in dark Fantasy. I like gritty worlds and characters, shadowy underbelly going on, and a dark twisted fantasy at the center. highly reccomend. Also, Saskia M. you can NEVER go wrong listening to her. One of the best narratarors!
