Historia
According to some estimates, there are at least 600 different "brands" of psychotherapy, most of which are not supported by scientific research. Jonathan N. Stea provides a takedown of mental health misinformation and pseudoscience to educate and embolden listeners who wish to make informed decisions about their mental health. Listeners are empowered to protect themselves from mental health scams, charlatanry, and poor or misguided health practices that thrive in the multi-trillion-dollar wellness industry.

Separates science from pseudoscience.
Revisado: 12-29-24
I highly recommend Mind the Science by Jonathan Stea. It is an important introduction to scientific literacy, critical thinking, and the dangers of pseudoscience as applied to the unregulated and wildly profitable mental health and wellness industry. The book reminded me of Carl Sagan's Demon-haunted World, though, Stea takes on pseudoscience in the mental health and wellness area. I certainly was not aware of how much pseudoscientific therapies and practices interfere with science-based ones. The book is scrupulously fair in following the best scientific evidence for health and wellness. Stea also shows you how to detect and guard against pseudoscientific claims. The book is written in a highly accessible manner. Stea narrates his own book, which is a bit of a hit and miss proposition. He has some strange pronunciations (to my American ear) and cadences, but is easy to understand and follow.

Historia
In early 1943, Magda Ritter's parents send her to relatives in Bavaria, hoping to keep her safe from the Allied bombs strafing Berlin. Young German women are expected to do their duty - working for the Reich or marrying to produce strong, healthy children. After an interview with the civil service, Magda is assigned to the Berghof, Hitler's mountain retreat. Only after weeks of training does she learn her assignment: she will be one of several young women tasting the Führer's food, offering herself in sacrifice to keep him from being poisoned.

Engaging history/romance
Revisado: 11-09-23
I enjoyed the book and performance. It would probably be more intriguing for readers not that familiar with WW II. It’s almost like a Forrest Gump plot, getting the protagonist to witness different key points in history. Very well performed as an elderly woman recounting her youth. Enjoyable but a bit drawn out at the end for me.

Historia
"That Others May Live" is a mantra that defines the fearless men of Alaska's 212th Pararescue Unit, the PJs, one of the most elite military forces on the planet. Whether they are rescuing citizens injured and freezing in the Alaskan wilderness or saving wounded Rangers and SEALs in blazing firefights at war, the PJs are the least known and most highly trained of America's warriors. Never Quit is the true story of how Jimmy Settle, an Alaskan shoe-store clerk, became a Special Forces Operator and war hero.

True story of grit, perseverance and bravery
Revisado: 08-07-18
I came across this title by accident and it caught my attention. I'm glad I decided to listen to it. I was unaware of this specialization and the amount of dedication and training it requires. I learned a lot about these brave rescuers and the challenges they have to overcome. The authors story is also one of single minded pursuit of a goal, overcoming setback after setback. The book is informative and inspiring.

Historia
From the authors of the New York Times best-selling The Heart of Everything That Is and Halsey's Typhoon comes the dramatic untold story of a daredevil bomber pilot and his misfit crew who fly their lone B-17 into the teeth of the Japanese Empire in 1943, engage in the longest dogfight in history, and change the momentum of the war in the Pacific - but not without making the ultimate sacrifice.

Fascinating WW II History
Revisado: 03-20-18
An episode of amazing bravery from the Pacific air war that should be widely known. This history is well researched and well written. It may be too much detail for someone not deeply interested in the details of the war but for those who are, this is a must read.

Historia
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to find yourself strapped to a giant rocket that's about to go from zero to 17,500 miles per hour? Or to look back on Earth from outer space and see the surprisingly precise line between day and night? Or to stand in front of the Hubble Space Telescope, wondering if the emergency repair you're about to make will inadvertently ruin humankind's chance to unlock the universe's secrets? Mike Massimino has been there, and in Spaceman he puts you inside the suit.

Inspiring Insightful Book
Revisado: 04-24-17
What did you love best about Spaceman?
The story was both inspiring, about always working toward your dreams, and insightful about the challenges and work of the space program. The fact that the author read his book makes it feel like you are having a fascinating conversation with him. Who doesn't want to hear an astronaut tell his best stories?
What other book might you compare Spaceman to and why?
There are other good astronaut biographies. This one is more intentional about telling people that hard work can overcome any obstacle.

Lovely, gentle, beautiful
Revisado: 11-11-16
A Japanese story translated into English but well worth experiencing. It is a gentle yet deeply engaging story about a love of math, human connections, family. An odd mix but brought together in harmony. Highly recommend even for those not interested in math.

Historia
At the outset of World War II, Denmark did not resist German occupation. Deeply ashamed of his nation's leaders, 15-year-old Knud Pedersen resolved with his brother and a handful of schoolmates to take action against the Nazis if the adults would not. Naming their secret club after the fiery British leader, the young patriots in the Churchill Club committed countless acts of sabotage, infuriating the Germans, who eventually had the boys tracked down and arrested. But their efforts were not in vain.

Compelling Story
Revisado: 08-22-15
I admit I had not heard this story until reading this book. The story is absorbing, moving and compelling. I could not help but wonder how I would have reacted in the same situation, like the boys who rebelled or like most of the adults who acquiesced. I also wonder how much of the boys actions are due to bravery and how much to the rebelliousness and fearlessness of youth. Two quibbles. First, the author mentions but does not elaborate on the successful evacuation of the Jews by Danes before they were deported by the Nazis. The Danes certainly deserve credit for that rap in comparison to action (or inaction) by other countries and esp since they are criticized for capitulating to the Nazis. Second, the book narrator was very good but I felt the actor voicing Knud Pederson was over the top sometimes and I found it a bit distracting. Overall an excellent book esp for those unfamiliar with heroics of the Churchill Club.
