Historia
Making a much-anticipated return to the world of Hild, Nicola Griffith’s Menewood transports listeners back to seventh-century Britain, a land of rival kings and religions poised for epochal change. Hild is no longer the bright child who made a place in Edwin Overking’s court with her seemingly supernatural insight. She is eighteen, honed and tested, the formidable lady of Elmet, now building her personal stronghold in the valley of Menewood.

So good!
Revisado: 10-25-23
This is so beautifully written and impeccably researched. I missed Hild and could not be happier to be back in her world !

Not great
Revisado: 03-14-15
What disappointed you about Islands in the Mist?
Everything. I love fantasy and myth so I thought this would be right up my alley. But sadly, it wasn't.
What was most disappointing about J.M. Hofer’s story?
The story was not cohesive and it felt like some parts of the story were just forced in as filler.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of John Keating?
Anyone who could have made Bran sound like he was at least somewhat intellegent! After hearing the narrator say "What?" (pronounced Whooat!) 50 times I gave up and returned the book!
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I appreciated some of the mythical references.

Historia
In seventh-century Britain, small kingdoms are merging, frequently and violently. A new religion is coming ashore; the old gods are struggling, their priests worrying. Hild is the king's youngest niece, and she has a glimmering mind and a natural, noble authority. She will become a fascinating woman and one of the pivotal figures of the Middle Ages: Saint Hilda of Whitby. But now she has only the powerful curiosity of a bright child, a will of adamant, and a way of seeing the world that can seem uncanny, even supernatural, to those around her.

Excellent!
Revisado: 10-04-14
Would you consider the audio edition of Hild to be better than the print version?
I have read the print version and listened to the audio book numerous time. Though I love the story in general I will say that I enjoyed the audio immensely - trying to figure out how to pronounce some of the Anglo/ Irish/ Briton names was difficult in the print version to say the least!
What about Pearl Hewitt’s performance did you like?
Terrific narrator!! The ancient names seemed to roll right off of her tongue.
Any additional comments?
Great read - strong, female focused historical fiction. I can't wait for the rest of Hild's story
