I’ve never read CS Poe before. My mistake! Memento Mori is excellent. Crisp writing, expertly drawn characters, and a mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end? Yes, please! Kale Williams’ narration is phenomenal, too. Highly recommended!

A darker side of Alice

If Leland being a retired assassin in the Hitman books was too lightweight for you, meet Liam, a homicide detective who is an avenging Dexter on the side.

Alice Winters turns the zaniness way, way down for this surprisingly sober, often dark story about murder, secrets, betrayal, and trust. Definitely don’t want to give anything away, so just be prepared for a book that is a bit macabre and loaded with twists.

PS - Greg B gives a master class in narration on this one. Top notch work.

First, I typically adore NJR as a narrator but found his extra gruff / extra raspy Diem in book one to be incredibly distracting. Sounds like he toned it down a bit here, which helped keep me in the story.

I appreciate the level of emotional complexity Nicky James brings to this story and the believable peeling of the layers of Diem’s protective armor. So props for that.

Unfortunately, while much of this story is engaging and the plot whirs along at a nice clip, there is also a lot of repetition in constantly revisiting Diem’s emotional barriers, often in nearly identical language and scenarios. It becomes tedious. I was also disappointed in the weirdly flat and underwhelming “climax.” The case is mostly resolved off page with no showdown or confrontation. What?! Truly an epic letdown.

I wasn’t overly enamored of the mystery here — it seemed both overly drawn out and, frankly, a bit preposterous — but that’s fine. Aslan’s healing is rightly the focus here, and Nicky James masterfully plumbs the depths of his despair and the fragile tendrils of his recovery. NJR absolutely excels in his narration, particularly of Aslan. Beautifully done, sir.

The mystery at the core of this story baffled me almost until the end. SO WELL DONE! This is Nicky James at her best, weaving a taut mystery while letting Q + A’s relationship develop in believable ways that don’t bring the plot to a standstill. Tremendous storytelling, with NJR hitting all the right notes in his narration.

Unlike the other books in this series, there is no central mystery to uncover here. This is pure romance with no police procedural. If you’re okay with that deviation — and if you’re already a fan of Valor and Doyle — this is a sweet summation to their love affair. We get Quaid being Quaid (neurotic, wound a bit too tightly, but also devoted to his loved ones) and Aslan being his usual brash and bold self, loving Q without reservation or restraint. The wedding is lovely. Looking forward to seeing what lies in store for our favorite detectives!

Yes, this book is maybe one chili pepper on the spice scale, but if you’re okay with that fact and just want a good, old fashioned whodunit, look no further! This is a fun, twisty mystery that is tightly plotted and wholly believable. I was riveted! I came to this book after finishing Amy Lane’s “Fish” PI series, and I found exactly what I was looking for. Skipping off now to get book two!

PS - Always wonderful to be in the very capable hands — er, voice — of the great NJR.

I typically adore Amy Lane’s writing, but this one is a huge miss. Nothing — and I genuinely mean NOTHING — happens for vast stretches of this book. At least half of this story could have been edited out with no impact on the plot or characters. The entire thing was just so unbelievably flat and repetitious. Sadly, Gomez Pugh did nothing to add any spark or life to this boring mess. (Greg Tremblay / Boudreaux voices cameos of Bobby and Reg in one of the Fish books and the difference is startling,) Lastly, I continue to find it lazy and offensive for cis het authors to use homophobia as their default plot device. Do better.

This series started out strong and continues to wow me with each new book. Great work, Vawn! Placing Tris and Danny (and, by extension, Dusty) at a murder mystery weekend at a haunted, isolated hotel *during a blizzard* was a stroke of genius. Come for the laughs, stay for the twisty mystery, the friendships, and the absolutely delightful romance at the center of it all.

Please … let’s get #5 to audio asap!

I loved this book! The mystery was intriguing and kept me off balance right to end. Speaking of which, I found the ending to be both whip-bang thrilling and sweetly emotional. Well done!

Throughout this story, I adored the way Alice revealed more of Hiro and Maddox’s respective dark pasts, all while still maintaining the zingy character interactions and laugh out loud moments she is known for.

Greg B was wonderful, as always, on the narration. I appreciated that his narration of the Japanese characters never veered into stereotype. Fantastic job!
