A Novel Idea for a Murder Mystery/Crime Story
Revisado: 10-21-23
There are layers to this one! I loved the complexity of it. It’s drops you right into the middle of things from the start, so you’re figuring out what’s going on at about the same rate as the main character. I didn’t love the narration — it was fine, but the voices of the various characters were hard to distinguish at times. I wonder if this one might be better read in print. Regardless, the narration didn’t stop me from listening to all 19 hours of this book! Highly recommend this one.

Who hasn’t wondered for a split second what the world would be like if a person who is the object of your affliction ceased to exist? But then you’ve probably never heard of The McMasters Conservatory, dedicated to the consummate execution of the homicidal arts. To gain admission, a student must have an ethical reason for erasing someone who deeply deserves a fate no worse (nor better) than death. The campus of this “Poison Ivy League” college—its location unknown to even those who study there—is where you might find yourself the practice target of a classmate.

Unique Story, So-So Narration
Revisado: 07-06-23
I really enjoyed this book! The premise is unique and the story is told in an interesting and unconventional way, never revealing too much at once. Good character development as well. But — I have to be honest — I didn’t love the narration. NPH’s narration was a bit stilted and he tended to over-pronounce words to the point where it was distracting. Simon Vance’s narration was fine for the most part but there are some accents that he should just not attempt. That being said, the story was strong intriguing enough to keep me listening until the end.

Character-Driven & Full of Heart
Revisado: 06-22-23
I absolutely love the Thursday Murder Club. The characters are so well-written, I feel like I know them all personally. The story is fascinating and full of twists and turns that keep you guessing until the very end. And the narrator is perfect! She really captures then voice of each character in the story and keeps you laughing and crying and anticipating what happens next. I’m so glad I stumbled across this series!

Not Christie’s Best
Revisado: 06-22-23
Fraser’s narration was excellent, as per usual, but the story’s plot twist was painfully predictable. Also disappointing that some of Christie’s antiquated, biased ideas were highlighted here. This work is definitely skippable.

Not on par with Hugh Fraser
Revisado: 10-17-22
The book is a classic, of course, and one of Christie’s best, but there is something about Armitage’s narration that I find distracting. His portrayal of Hastings is so breathy and whiny that I can hardly listen to him. I’ll stick with Hugh Fraser’s narration in future.

Historia
Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is summoned to France after receiving a distressing letter with a urgent cry for help. Upon his arrival in Merlinville-sur-Mer, the investigator finds the man who penned the letter, the South American millionaire Monsieur Renauld, stabbed to death and his body flung into a freshly dug open grave on the golf course adjoining the property. Meanwhile the millionaire's wife is found bound and gagged in her room. Apparently, it seems that Renauld and his wife were victims of a failed break-in, resulting in Renauld's kidnapping and death.

Classic Christie
Revisado: 09-19-22
A great early Hercule Poirot mystery that will keep you guessing. The narration by Armitage was okay but definitely gave the story a much more dramatic flair than I think Christie intended. It almost made me hate Hastings!

Historia
Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn’t seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.

Wonderful
Revisado: 09-10-20
Just wonderful. Getting to know Harold and Maureen and the other lovely characters in this book was an absolute joy. Rachel Joyce has such a natural, unhurried writing style and Jim Broadbent’s narration was spot on. The human emotion was so real that I had to listen to the book in pieces but it really is worth it in the end. I can’t recommend this book enough.

Mixed feelings about this one
Revisado: 08-30-20
I liked the idea of this audiobook and think the format is interesting; I liked that it let us hear directly from the three characters at formative times in their lives. I liked that it portrayed the complexities of human lives and showed how past experiences can affect relationship dynamics — and how both one’s beliefs about oneself and perspectives on other people, even those closest, can be skewed.
I was a bit frustrated that the three characters told their stories at completely different times in their lives, with no overlap. I found Nathan’s story really compelling and appreciated his character development. His was the most thought-provoking of the three diaries. Ziggy was honestly obnoxious and I don’t feel that his character really developed any true self awareness (even for a 15 year old). And I was surprised that Rachel’s story was set so much earlier; I’d wanted to learn how her character grew from an infatuated, somewhat naive 19 year old into Ziggy’s social justice warrior mom, but that wasn’t part of her story. I feel a like I might have appreciated her story more if I’d heard it first, then Nathan’s, then Ziggy’s. It just left me feeling like there was something missing at the end. A lack of resolution.
But I don’t think this story is supposed to be resolved. It just provides three snapshots from three different periods in time from three unique perspectives. It’s a series of vignettes that are loosely tied together. And so, for what it is, it’s a good story.

Whilst organising a mock murder hunt for the village fete hosted by Sir George and Lady Stubbs, a feeling of dread settles on the famous crime novelist Adriane Oliver. Call it instinct, but it's a feeling she just can't explain...or get away from. In desperation she summons her old friend, Hercule Poirot - and her instincts are soon proved correct when the "pretend" murder victim is discovered playing the scene for real, a rope wrapped tightly around her neck.

This is one of my favorite Poirot mysteries —it keeps you guessing up until the very end. David Suchet does an excellent job of narrating, although some of his female voices are a bit over the top. Overall a wonderful audiobook. Highly recommend.

Historia
This collection of 25 Hercule Poirot adventures is compiled from short stories written by Agatha Christie for The Sketch magazine in 1923 from March to December. In these stories, including "The Disappearance of Mr. Davenheim", "The Veiled Lady", and "The Adventure of the Egyptian Tomb", the eccentric private detective slowly and surely solves mysteries involving jealousy, revenge, and greed. These stories were well-received at the time and cemented Christie's reputation as the worthy successor to Arthur Conan Doyle.

Poor Narration
Revisado: 08-12-20
I can’t concentrate on the stories — which are wonderful — because the narration is so distracting! Charles Armstrong does not have the depth and versatility of Hugh Fraser or even David Suchet. I’ll stick with those two for Poirot audiobooks moving forward.
