Favorite narrator. Excellent true historical account/story.
Revisado: 05-07-25
Interesting. I’m not a mother but I understand her fight for her children. And her spirited fight against the male establishments, religious zealots, etc. Amazing and detailed true account of a tireless woman who went to incredible lengths to do what was right in a time that was wrong. Well done. Great listen.

Historia
Everywhere hailed as a masterpiece of historical adventure, this enthralling narrative recounts the experiences of 12 American sailors who were shipwrecked off the coast of Africa in 1815, captured by desert nomads, sold into slavery, and subjected to a hellish two-month journey through the bone-dry heart of the Sahara. The ordeal of these men - who found themselves tested by barbarism, murder, starvation, death, dehydration, and hostile tribes that roamed the desert on camelback - is made indelibly vivid in this gripping account of courage, brotherhood, and survival.

Needless extraneous details…
Revisado: 03-25-23
Needless extraneous details fill in for lack of real substantive historical information. I would have preferred less ‘color’ and more substance, but it was still a decent read about real events.

Absolute nonsense…. Absurd. Painful listen.
Revisado: 01-22-23
The author attempts to use big words and complicated or ridiculous explanations to make the reader believe he’s educated or knowledgeable. You don’t have to listen long to discount that charade.
I’ve never seen someone twist themselves into such a pretzel with absolute nonsense.
He discounts scientific evidence as if he can swat it away with convoluted irrational bizarre explanations—out of some being in the sky?
It’s so absurd but I listened to understand the irrational thinking of creationists. That was tough, but I tolerated it. Wow.

The story begins in 1629, when the pride of the Dutch East India Company, the Batavia, is on its maiden voyage en route from Amsterdam to the Dutch East Indies, laden down with the greatest treasure to leave Holland. The magnificent ship is already boiling over with a mutinous plot that is just about to break into the open when, just off the coast of Western Australia, it strikes an unseen reef in the middle of the night.

Historia
In this Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, historian Barbara Tuchman brings to life the people and events that led up to World War I. This was the last gasp of the Gilded Age, of Kings and Kaisers and Czars, of pointed or plumed hats, colored uniforms, and all the pomp and romance that went along with war. How quickly it all changed...and how horrible it became.

EXCEPTIONAL. OUTSTANDING.
Revisado: 07-10-22
I rarely write books reviews, but I found this work to be EXCEPTIONAL.
EXCEPTIONAL writing and translation of a known historical event is presented by Barbara Tuchman, whereby she transfixes us with her extraordinary gift for story telling.
EXCEPTIONAL and OUTSTANDING narration is performed by Wanda McCaddon, that keeps one glued to the story—with perfect inflection, insight into the subtle quips and intelligent wit presented by the author, and appropriate accents to remind the listener who is speaking.
I highly recommend this book. FIVE STARS.
It is perfect in every way.
If I were to venture one constructive suggestion for a book like this being READ to a LISTENER such as via AUDIBLE, I would prefer an attachment / PDF of the maps concerning locations of certain battles, or the regions described—but this day and age one can find these maps with a simple google search.
I did just that—and the regions really sprang to life and it enriched my understanding of this extraordinary work of history.
That said, I cannot give this book any higher praise. Well done.

Historia
In the early years of the 18th century, a band of French scientists set off on a daring, decade-long expedition to South America in a race to measure the precise shape of the earth. Like Lewis and Clark's exploration of the American West, their incredible mission revealed the mysteries of a little-known continent to a world hungry for discovery. Scaling 16,000-foot mountains in the Peruvian Andes, and braving jaguars, pumas, insects, and vampire bats in the jungle, the scientists barely completed their mission.

Good. Could have been great…
Revisado: 07-01-22
Despite the breathless narration (which was a bit annoying) and essentially a retelling of the book, Latitude, by Nicholas Crane, it’s a worthy read/listen.
But in fairness, the actual story of the ‘mapmaker’s wife’ is told only in the last 3 hours of the book. That was disappointing.
The vast majority of the book was about the incredible scientific expedition of the group with Charles Marie de La Condamine, the French explorer, geographer, and mathematician who spent ten years in Ecuador, measuring the length of a degree of latitude at the equator and preparing the first map of the Amazon.
Again, this was still a good/worthy read.
But for those interested in such adventures, I HIGHLY recommend the book, Latitude, cited above.

North Korea is isolated and hungry, bankrupt and belligerent. It is also armed with nuclear weapons. Between 150,000 and 200,000 people are being held in its political prison camps, which have existed twice as long as Stalin’s Soviet gulags and twelve times as long as the Nazi concentration camps. Very few born and raised in these camps have escaped - but Shin Dong-hyuk did.

Authors should not read their own works…
Unless they are trained or have some basic acting skills.
This book would have been much more powerful and impactful had the narrator/author not sounded like a robot. Unfortunately, he comes across as a hostage victim himself—reading at gun point.
A missed opportunity here. But the material itself was worth the albeit painful listen.

"Forty-four percent of the American population is convinced that Jesus will return to judge the living and the dead sometime in the next 50 years," writes Sam Harris. The fact that nearly half of the American population apparently believes this...should be considered a moral and intellectual emergency."

Some Authors Should Read Their Work, Others Should Not
Revisado: 04-23-17
This book is a case of the former and not the latter. It's difficult to explain why some authors should read their own works and others should not. But certainly one would think that the author's listening to the production, length of the book, communication style (authors vs author/speakers, etc) would play a role.
Sam Harris needed to read this book-- the same can be said for all of his books. But the genius of Sam Harris trumps the performance and it is a highly recommended listen.

Historia
Muhammad's was a life of almost unparalleled historical importance, yet for all the iconic power of his name, the intensely dramatic story of the prophet of Islam is not well known. In The First Muslim, Lesley Hazleton brings him vibrantly to life. Drawing on early eyewitness sources and on history, politics, religion, and psychology, she renders him as a man in full, in all his complexity and vitality. Hazleton's account follows the arc of Muhammad's rise from powerlessness to power, from anonymity to renown.

Another Fantastic Hazelton Book!
Revisado: 03-24-17
Lesley Hazelton's books are phenomenal reads and even greater listens...as she richly provides incredible historic detail and personal accounts steeped in painstaking research.
If I had one complaint here-- is that Hazelton has spoiled me with her other books. The others were read by Hazelton, the author, and her voice and tone are like no other. Hypnotic at times. I only wish she had read this most important book as well. The reader does a fine job. But nothing compares to that deep rich voice of Hazelton doing her own work with the subtleties, pride and perfection it deserves.
If u have any interest in this subject, Islam or the central characters and actions of the time frame that formed this ideology--this should be added to your list of MUST READS...along with "After the Prophet" by Lesley Hazelton.
Two exceptional books.
