It was a clear description of the two states of being. I would have liked to see more options on how to move myself from one to the other

Historia
No One Would Listen is the exclusive story of the Harry Markopolos-lead investigation into Bernie Madoff and his $65 billion Ponzi scheme. While a lot has been written about Madoff's scam, few actually know how Markopolos and his team - affectionately called "the Fox Hounds" by Markopolos himself - uncovered what Madoff was doing years before this financial disaster reached its pinnacle. Unfortunately, no one listened, until the damage of the world's largest financial fraud ever was irreversible.

Mostly interesting
Revisado: 03-23-18
But the two last chapters don't fit the story. At least the last one is labeled an appendix but the penultimate one is a rambling set of victim's stories that do not fit in.

True story?
Revisado: 02-28-18
I have no idea whether this is a true story as advertised, but it is an entertaining story. One reason for my disbelief is that I never heard of this before and the book was published in 1998, that is 20 years ago. I find it hard to believe that I would not have heard of it before if there was any other proof of the story. Then again, I know a bit of the history of computers and the internet and I did not notice any evident untrue parts.
Again, entertaining enough to recommend it as a story, with the remark that I cannot comment on the truthfulness of this.

Had the Angles and Saxons not purposefully migrated to the isles of the Britons and brought with them their already-well-developed use of language, Angelina Jolie may never have appeared in the movie Beowulf. Professor Michael D.C. Drout is at his best when lecturing on the fascinating history, language, and societal adaptations of the Anglo-Saxons.

Historia
What are the grand dynamics that drive the accumulation and distribution of capital? Questions about the long-term evolution of inequality, the concentration of wealth, and the prospects for economic growth lie at the heart of political economy. But satisfactory answers have been hard to find for lack of adequate data and clear guiding theories.

Very long, hard but interesting
Revisado: 11-21-17
Very long and very long chapters, which could have been subdivided easily. The graphs discussed are provided in a pdf, which makes the discussion easier to understand. It is a difficult subject but the explanation is clear.
The subject is very important to today's society. Recommended, but expect to need time and attention.

In Music as a Mirror of History, Great Courses favorite Professor Greenberg of San Francisco Performances returns with a fascinating and provocative premise: Despite the abstractness and the universality of music - and our habit of listening to it divorced from any historical context - music is a mirror of the historical setting in which it was created. Music carries a rich spectrum of social, cultural, historical, and philosophical information, all grounded in the life and experience of the composer.

Enjoyable mix of music and history
Revisado: 04-25-17
I enjoyed this mix of music and history. While the author and narrator is mostly known for his music discussions, here he combines music with history. He has chosen 24 pieces of music that are strongly connected to the time that they were composed and explains how the music fits into history, in some cases going back a century to place the piece correctly into the time period. While he illustrates the talks with parts of the musical pieces, this is much more talk than music. No previous knowledge of either the music or the history is necessary.

Lovely short story, a continuation of 'Penric and his demon'. Penric has finished his studies a year ago and is working for the Princess who paid for them. She has a little side job for him, which is not quite going as expected.

Everyone has their own inner philosopher - a voice within that asks, oh so insistently, philosophical questions. Everyone wants to know what the ultimate nature of the world is, what the self is, whether we have free will, how our minds relate to our bodies, whether we can really know anything, where ethical truth comes from, what the meaning of life is, and whether or not there is a God.

Good content, not so good narrator
Revisado: 08-04-16
This is a good introduction to the essential questions of philosophy. Unfortunately the lecturer has a voice which is somewhat soporific. So this comes with a warning not to listen in the car or in other locations where falling asleep might be dangerous.
On the other hand, hearing parts of the lecture more than once does not harm and can even help following the chain of thought.

Historia
We evolved to eat berries rather than bagels, to live in mud huts rather than condos, to sprint barefoot rather than play football - or did we? Are our bodies and brains truly at odds with modern life? Although it may seem as though we have barely had time to shed our hunter-gatherer legacy, biologist Marlene Zuk reveals that the story is not so simple. Popular theories about how our ancestors lived - and why we should emulate them - are often based on speculation, not scientific evidence. Armed with a razor-sharp wit and brilliant, eye-opening research, Zuk takes us to the cutting edge of biology to show that evolution can work much faster than was previously realized.

Interesting rebuttal of the ideas behind paleo
Revisado: 04-28-16
The author takes the ideas behind the paleo movement one by one and confronts them with the scientific research available. Humans are still evolving and we never fitted perfectly into the one hunter gatherer society, one reason is that there is no single such society.

From batting averages and political polls to game shows and medical research, the real-world application of statistics continues to grow by leaps and bounds. How can we catch schools that cheat on standardized tests? How does Netflix know which movies you'll like? What is causing the rising incidence of autism? As best-selling author Charles Wheelan shows us in Naked Statistics, the right data and a few well-chosen statistical tools can help us answer these questions and more.
