Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

I am a horse person, and I abandoned this.
Revisado: 01-20-22
First, this feels like a horse-crazy teenager wrote this based upon what SHE had read up on about horses. In the first 10 min I was skeptical..."my horse was grey, even dark grey as a colt, but now that she is older a lighter grey"....young female horses are NOT colts. Male young horses are colts. This VERY basic horse fact (NOT) screamed, "I know nothing about horses, but let me write about them." And so the story went. I stuck with it, trying to overlook the inaneness of the female rider's thought process as she rode. ANYONE doing Grand Prix showjumping would NEVER think this way on course. It just got worse. Every possible cliche and predictable story line was used and followed. It wasn't even entertaining.

Terrible. And not in a good way.
Revisado: 12-10-21
I wanted to like this. But I just slogged on. First, the use of the second person as a POV is just weird. I couldn't get into it, no matter how hard I tried. And the other characters were flat, underdeveloped, all of that. It was predictable and trite. Don't bother.

Historia
In the summer after graduating from college, Suleika Jaouad was preparing, as they say in commencement speeches, to enter “the real world”. She had fallen in love and moved to Paris to pursue her dream of becoming a war correspondent. The real world she found, however, would take her into a very different kind of conflict zone. It started with an itch - first on her feet, then up her legs, like a thousand invisible mosquito bites. Then a trip to the doctor and, a few weeks shy of her 23rd birthday, a diagnosis: leukemia, with a 35 percent chance of survival.

As a cancer survivor, I loved this. No one’s battle is the same, but there are similarities in all. Great narration, the writing was wonderful, and it kept me interested and engaged. What’s lacking? Nothing.

I downloaded this primarily because you don’t normally see books that hinge around dressage. It really wasn’t worth it. The dressage part was annoying (no one flies a horse from Wellington up the east coast to NY), the main characters were shallow and, frankly, stupid, and the plot predictable. A waste of a credit.

In 1970s Baltimore, 14-year-old Mary Jane loves cooking with her mother, singing in her church choir, and enjoying her family’s subscription to the Broadway Showtunes of the Month record club. Shy, quiet, and bookish, she’s glad when she lands a summer job as a nanny for the daughter of a local doctor. A respectable job, Mary Jane’s mother says. In a respectable house.

a cross between Pixar and Harry Potter...
Revisado: 07-11-21
I have had SO many people suggest this book to me, so I gave it a shot. While the narration is entertaining, the story is just not fantastic. Not good enough to run alongside the other “magical” books....I felt like I was dropped into the middle of it. Is this modern times? Future? How did these youths come to be magical? I felt that I could suspend all that for a better story but in the end, I didn’t really care about any of the characters. Meh.

Historia
Daisy is a girl coming of age in LA in the late '60s, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s 20, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne.

Painfuuuulllllll
Revisado: 12-30-20
Oh my dear sweet Christmas baby Jesus. I can be asked to suspend reality for SOME things. But this author asks me to suspend it for EVERYTHING. It’s almost like a SNL skit of a disaster movie. AND THEN, CAPTIVE AUDIENCE, OUR HEROINE NOT ONLY WAS SCREWED, SHE WAS ROYALLY SCREWED....EVEN MORE! and it just kept going. I might go for it if it were one thing, but I just didn’t believe ANYTHING about it, from the get go. Add to that a bunch of poorly developed characters, dialogue that wasn’t believable (either) and was inconsistent...what seven year old talks like she is twenty five but with a seven year old’s accent? And then action scenes that just keep repeating themselves? Don’t waste your time.

Zero stars if I could
Revisado: 12-04-19
I’m not sure if the other reviewers of this book were listening to the SAME book as I? First, this was an inane and predictable, if not plodding, plot line. The narrators were awful, which didn’t help move it along. I struggled to keep with it. I’ve never abandoned an audiobook, but I almost gave up on this one. Really. Awful. Who does a Hispanic accent like this? I could have overlooked it had the plot carried me along but alas, no. Don’t waste your brain cells, the writer sure didn’t.
