Historia
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Historia
When André de Ruyter took over as Eskom CEO in January 2020, he quickly realised why it was considered the toughest job in South Africa. Aside from neglected equipment, ageing power stations and an eroded skills base, he discovered that Eskom was crippled by corruption on a staggering scale. De Ruyter takes the listener inside the boardrooms and government meetings where South Africa’s future is shaped, with ministers often pulling in conflicting directions, and candidly reflects on his three years at the power utility.

One headache after another
Revisado: 05-13-24
I have read a lot of business books both by and about CEO’s but I have never seen this level of handicapping of an executive. South Africa has GOT to make it easier to do business and get the politicians out of public enterprises. Corruption, incompetence, inefficiency, blaming everyone but themselves - these are not healthy traits on which to build a bright future. South Africans deserve better than what Mr. De Ruyter had to put up with.

Historia
In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s.

As a parent, I give this my highest possible recommendation!
Revisado: 05-09-24
I have three children (9,6 & 4 as of this writing) and already have been fighting battles with screens. This book confirmed many of my suspicions re: smartphones. The data is pouring in and the picture is not pretty.
The good news is that parents are not by any stretch of the imagination helpless here. It is indeed a war, but is is one worth fighting. Our children are worth it. Suit up & grab your sword!

Historia
Vladimir Putin is the world’s most dangerous man. Alone among world leaders, he has the power to reduce the United States and Europe to ashes in a nuclear firestorm and has threatened to do so. He invades his neighbors, most recently Ukraine, meddles in western elections, and orders assassinations inside and outside Russia. His regime is autocratic and deeply corrupt. But that is only half the story. Unflinching, hard-hitting, and objective, Philip Short’s biography gives us the whole tale, up to the present day.

Comprehensive & nuanced
Revisado: 04-08-24
This is an excellent biography of one of the most powerful and consequential men of our time. While this book is certainly not an apologia for Mr. Putin it provides a wealth of behind-the-scenes information as well as serving as a useful primer on the Russian viewpoint of the West and America in particular.
Unlike many of the denser texts I have read, I never found myself saying “these chapters could have been collapsed into one” or “I really didn’t need to know about this”. Every hit is relevant to the story and the portrait of the man. Recommend for anyone with an interest in US/Russia relations, geo power politics, or current events.

In Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu’s New York Times bestselling autobiography, the prime minister of Israel tells the story of his family, his path to leadership, and his unceasing commitment to defending his country and securing its future. Through a host of vivid anecdotes, he narrates his own evolution from soldier to statesman, while providing a unique perspective on leadership, the fraught geopolitics of the Middle East, and his successful efforts to liberate Israel’s economy, which helped turn it into a global powerhouse of technological innovation.

Historia
Since he was a small boy, Mosab Hassan Yousef has had an inside view of the deadly terrorist group Hamas. The oldest son of Sheikh Hassan Yousef, a founding member of Hamas and its most popular leader, young Mosab assisted his father for years in his political activities while being groomed to assume his legacy, politics, status...and power. But everything changed when Mosab turned away from terror and violence and embraced instead the teachings of another famous Middle East leader.

Historia
The Talmud says: “If someone comes to kill you, rise up and kill him first.” This instinct to take every measure, even the most aggressive, to defend the Jewish people is hardwired into Israel’s DNA. From the very beginning of its statehood in 1948, protecting the nation from harm has been the responsibility of its intelligence community and armed services, and there is one weapon in their vast arsenal that they have relied upon to thwart the most serious threats: Targeted assassinations have been used countless times, on enemies large and small....

Historia
Is economic—or broader—conflict, well beyond the trade and technology war that has already erupted, inevitable between the world’s two superpowers? Will their clash produce a new economic leadership vacuum akin to the 1930s, when Great Britain was unable to play its traditional leadership role and a rising United States was unwilling to step in to save the global order?

Great if you work at the Brooking Institution, not so much if you don’t
Revisado: 10-02-23
This guy has spent most of his life in DC think-tanks and it shows - excessive verbosity, excessive linguistic repetition (did the editor not notice the recycling of whole sentences throughout the work?), excessive faith in institutions of questionable value (why precisely are the G7, G20, etc the best thing since sliced bread?) and an excessive preoccupation with Orange Man Bad aka he really, really, REALLY doesn’t like our 45th President. (He will only tell you this almost every chapter and even devote an entire chapter to this just in case the drip, drip, drip wasn’t sinking in.)
In fairness, the author does have some good points and knows his history well. But the work suffers so badly from the above that I cannot recommend this to people outside of the left-of-center foreign policy community.
If the author actually wants to get out of his ideological bubble, spend time with people whose livelihoods have been affected by trade policies, and see how his arguments are received, THAT would be something I would read. Anything else from this guy - no gracias.
A suggested work instead to the prospective reader - “The Hundred Year Marathon” by Michael Pillsbury. Oh, and you can probably get the substance of the author’s arguments (minus the obnoxiousness mentioned above) from a white paper from the Council on Foreign Relations.

Historia
Today, there are three Americas. At one extreme are the brain hubs with workers who are among the most productive, creative, and best-paid on the planet. At the other extreme are former manufacturing capitals that are rapidly losing jobs and residents. The rest of America could go either way. For the past 30 years, the three Americas have been growing apart at an accelerating rate. This divergence is one the most important developments in the history of the US and is reshaping the very fabric of our society. But the winners and losers aren't necessarily who you'd expect.

Here in a single volume is the entire, unabridged recording of Gibbon's masterpiece. Beginning in the second century A.D. at the apex of the Pax Romana, Gibbon traces the arc of decline and complete destruction through the centuries across Europe and the Mediterranean. It is a thrilling and cautionary tale of splendor and ruin, of faith and hubris, and of civilization and barbarism. Follow along as Christianity overcomes paganism... before itself coming under intense pressure from Islam.

Revisado: 05-10-23
WOW. Edward Gibbon’s magnum opus sure was a treat. I knew a lot about Rome & Constantinople beforehand but know a good deal more now. Very heavy on the details, it’s a reminder than human nature hasn’t changed at all over the centuries.
The one beef I have with this production is that, like others noted, the file was just too friggin’ big for Audible to maintain. It became part of my morning ritual to delete and re-download the book. This unfortunately deters some folks from persevering - Audible staff, if are reading this, please get this addressed!
