When you look at other killers in modern literature, even though listeners can feel an affinity for them, the characters must have a certain “coldness” that enables them to kill without constant remorse. The author and narrator have shaped a similar character who expresses no shame and no remorse, and it would never occur to Lawrence Odd that he should think differently. He is quite content with who he is. I was rooting for the psychopath towards the end

This is an excellent book for helping you to understand why you don't do the things you wish you did. It helps you to understand why you procrastinate, why fears get in the way of taking action, and why you self-sabotage. It's really not all that complex and we don't have to make it out to be this psychological mountain that will take years of therapy to resolve. Basically we have a conflict between our subconscious and conscious minds. Once we learn the techniques our subconscious mind uses to keep us from our goals, we can employ strategies to overcome them. There's a part of us that prefers comfort and the easy way. And unless we learn to get that part to cooperate with the part of us that has goals and ambition, we'll continue to struggle with self-discipline.
