Not what I expected
Revisado: 04-22-20
The story line is compelling but one narrator, Rankin I think, turned it into a la di da semi smirking narration. Then again maybe I just couldn't stand her voice. In any event, the book is more of a summer read than a gripping book you can't put down. Oddly enough, the author's epilogue is the most fascinating part of the book.

Thirty-six hours ago he slept with the woman of his dreams at the Savoy. An hour ago his train blew up. Historia
Agatha is pregnant and works part time stocking shelves at a grocery store in a ritzy London suburb, counting down the days until her baby is due. As the hours of her shifts creep by in increasing discomfort, the one thing she looks forward to at work is catching a glimpse of Meghan, the effortlessly chic customer whose elegant lifestyle dazzles her. Meghan has it all: two perfect children, a handsome husband, a happy marriage, and a stylish group of friends, and she writes perfectly droll confessional posts on her popular parenting blog.

Nice story. Not too suspenseful but keeps your interest. Narrator a little stiff and maybe needs to work on that

Good Story Bad Narrator
Revisado: 07-06-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Such an interesting topic...King...and then the narrator...mumbling, fumbling supposed to be a sixty year looking back but sounding like a 25 year old. Half way through I quit.

Where does The Power of One rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I was not aware of Bryce Courtenay until recently. This is a really good story made great by the narrator Bower. The story, the voices and the historical perspective reminded me of Shantaram. Bower really is terrific.

Historia
Collie Flanagan was named after his mother's favorite breed of dog. His brother, Bingo, was named for an Irish setter. Their names are the least of their worries because they're Flanagans, members of a wildly wealthy, impossibly articulate family that also includes a philandering father, pigeon-racing uncle, radical activist mother, and domineering media mogul father whose own daughter has accused him of being a murderer.

My review is based on the first two chapters...that's when I gave up. Cutesy without being funny...boring delivery by narrator although his Irish brogue is OK...neither believable nor interesting

Historia
Carpentaria is Alexis Wright's second novel, an epic set in the Gulf country of north-western Queensland, Australia. The novel's portrait of life in the precariously settled coastal town of Desperance centres on the powerful Phantom family, leader of the Westend Pricklebush people, and its battles with old Joseph Midnight's renegade Eastend mob on the one hand, and the white officials of Uptown and the neighbouring Gurfurrit mine on the other.
