Historia
A lone narrator meets a railway worker who is confined to a cold, gloomy station in a deep cutting near a tunnel entrance. This worker is a signalman, and it is his responsibility to give the green light for trains to pass through the area. These are slow, monotonous days. The signalman’s life is not marked by much, until the nightmares begin. Three times in a row, a ghost mysteriously appears before the signalman – and with each apparition, a tragic accident unfolds on the rail tracks. Although our narrator doubts the man at first, events soon make him a believer too.

Daunted by the "great big books" of the Western canon? Looking for the same pleasures, satisfactions, and insights from books that are shorter, more accessible, and less dependent on classical references and difficult language than tomes such as Moby-Dick and Ulysses?

Can't Recommend
Revisado: 05-05-24
The good: Narrator is entertaining and I wanted to read the books that were suggested by him.
The bad: What the reader is supposed to be skeptical over isn't clear. Issue appeared to be over what more readable/accessible books could replace their more classical counterparts. Some The book recommendations included WERE classics (e.g., Gogol's Dead Souls); some replacements didn't seem sufficient, and there were factual errors (e.g., the Watchmen/Charlton character equivalenta. Can't recommend.

In the civilian sector, books offer information on everything from fixing a leaky faucet to developing an effective workout program to cooking a good steak. Leadership Strategy and Tactics explains how to take leadership theory, quickly translate that theory into applicable strategy, and then put leadership into action at a tactical level. This audiobook is the solution that leaders at every level need.

Good, But Not Great.
Revisado: 11-29-22
Professor Fears is an excellent teacher and storyteller, but this course was lacking. It purports to discuss "life lessons" from great books, but is not articulate or organized in the way it identifies these lessons. The lectures are mostly book summaries and author biographies, and in his discussion of George S. Patton, there really wasn't a reference to a particular book. Many great books that deal with life lessons, such as Aurelius's "Meditations", were given short shift or excluded altogether. A disappointing effort, especially considering that Fears excels when discussing ancient Greeks and Romans. Check out his lectures On those topics.

Historia
A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below". At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C.S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old Devil to his nephew, Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man.

Good, but not great.
Revisado: 05-11-22
Too many anecdotes and not enough analysis. For the narrator, a book is often canonical because of luck, rather than the quality of the book itself.

Performances were great; the story, well ...
Revisado: 01-01-22
Great listening, and compelling to a point. Lithgow, Gallagher, Howard, and Stoll performed marvelously in this audio mystery. But while Patterson's concept of a crime committed in public with a more-or-less accepting audience is intriguing, the listener is left with wondering why the perpetrator went to so much trouble when simpler, and more expedient means of carrying out the deed we're at hand. Overall a four star effort.

Historia
Leviathan is a vigorous defense of a strong central government that was originally published in 1651, just after the English wars of 1642-49. This presentation explores the social and political turmoil during which Leviathan was written, including an examination of the radical political philosophies spawned by opposition to Stuart monarchy in England. It explains the materialistic foundation of Hobbes' philosophy and how this influenced his theory of man, society, and government.

... misleading title page. This isn't Hobbes' actual work of the Leviathan; rather it is an analysis and a discussion of the historical context of that work. Still, it was a good summary, and I don't regret getting it.
