I enjoyed listening to this audiobook and the retelling of the discrete coming of age stories during very violent times in Lebanon and the Middle East. We usually only get the official narratives about the war, it’s always refreshing to hear how the civilians experienced it day to day. In the same vein, I recommend the podcast ‘maabar’ if you understand arabic. As an aside, the dad was quite “liberal” even by 21st century standards, even a bit eccentric, he would have been an interesting person to meet.

On the other hand, I wish the narrator had practiced reading the names of people and places a bit. I winced at every mispronunciation they made, and there were plenty of those, they were quite distracting.
